Project Abstract

The document discusses the design of a finger-worn device to help visually impaired people interact with printed text. It notes that accessing printed materials like menus, business cards, and signs can be difficult for the visually impaired. While some devices have been proposed to help, they face issues with focus, mobility, text alignment, accuracy, and efficiency. The proposed device aims to allow visually impaired users to efficiently and effectively read printed text using a finger-worn device with optical character recognition and text-to-speech on a Raspberry Pi. The design will be inspired by studies with blind people and will be lightweight, small and portable.

Abstract

Finger-worn gadgets are a fairly enormously unstudied space for interactive design. These devices
can present many days to day problems face by blinds and visually impaired people. As accessing
hardcopies, a menu in a restaurant, business card and reading sign boards is a predicament for
visually impaired people. Many devices have been proposed to aid visually impaired and blind
person in performing routine matters but currently available state of the art devices around the
globe face numerous problems like focus, mobility, text alignment, accuracy, and efficiency. Our
motive is to make a device to assist visually impaired persons to interact with the world that they
may never had before i.e. efficiently and effectively read paper printed text with the aid of a finger-
worn device. To accomplish that, a technique called Optical character recognition (OCR) will be
used to identify printed characters using photoelectric devices and a software in raspberry pi to
read aloud the identified text. The design of the device will inspire with the early studies with the
blind people. Proposed design will be lightweight, small and portable which would help it enable
multiple operations
