Resource Levelling

The document describes three resource leveling problems involving scheduling activities and smoothing manpower requirements to minimize peak requirements. The first problem involves 8 activities and finds the critical path and leveled manpower. The second problem involves 7 activities and also finds the critical path and leveled manpower. The third problem involves 7 activities with variable duration estimates and performs resource leveling to minimize peak manpower requirements.

RESOURCE LEVELLING (PROBLEMS)

1. The data of a project which consists of 8 activities are shown in following table:

Activity 1-2 1-3 1-4 2-6 3-5 3-6 4-5 5-6

Duration (in weeks) 4 8 4 6 4 2 10 6
Manpower Requirement 2 15 13 16 14 13 15 14

(a) Find the critical path and the corresponding project completion time.
(b) Apply resource-levelling technique and obtain the smoothed manpower requirements of the
project, which minimizes the peak manpower requirement.

2. The data of a project which consists of 7 activities are shown in following table:

Activity 1-2 1-3 2-4 2-6 3-5 4-5 5-6

Duration (in weeks) 5 5 5 6 6 6 6

Manpower Requirement 40 24 16 10 20 20 30

(a) Find the critical path and the corresponding project completion time.

(b) Apply resource-levelling technique and obtain the smoothed manpower requirements of the
project, which minimizes the peak manpower requirement.

3. A project consists of 7 activities whose details are shown in following table including immediate
predecessor(s), optimistic estimate (a), most likely estimate (m), pessimistic estimate (b) and
manpower requirement.

Activity 1-2 1-3 2-6 3-4 4-5 4-6 5-6

Optimistic Time Estimate (a)

2 3 3 1 3 4 5
Most Likely Time Estimate (m)
3 3 5 4 6 7 6
Pessimistic Time Estimate (b)
4 3 7 7 9 10 7
Manpower Requirement 7 8 5 15 11 5 10

(a) Find the critical path and the expected completion time of the project.

(b) Perform resource-levelling and obtain the schedule of the activities and the corresponding
manpower requirement diagram such that the peak manpower requirement is minimized.
