Here's what we're learning this week:

Reading: Continuing our focus on nonfiction texts, and working on seeing the differences
between fiction and nonfiction. Our E nduring Understanding: Readers understand that
illustrations and details in a text help them identify the main idea or central message of a

text; Learners understand that we are all connected to people beyond our own
communities.

Phonics: Introducing the kids to Magic e For instance, bit will change to bite when magic
e is at the end of a word. Magic e switches short vowels to long vowels.

Writing: Fine tuning our personal narratives and working on publishing them this week to
share with each other at the end of the week.

Grammar: Future verbs! A future tense verb usually starts with the word will or shall
followed by the action word. I will jump over the creek.

Math: Starting Unit 4: place value. We will begin by looking at what makes a ten group and
representing and comparing teen numbers.

Social Studies/Science: We will follow up our field trip to DeGraaf Nature Center with more
discussions about life long ago and how it is different from life today.

Other news:

Book Signing/Author Visit: First Grade is pleased to announce that Michigan author Bill O.
Smith will join the New Groningen First Grade for a very special, musical reading of his
book, The Chickadee Spirit. In addition, Mr. Smiths three books are available for pre-order
purchase. There will also be an opportunity for the books you purchase to be signed by Bill
Smith the night of the concert! Please follow the link in the email this planner was sent to
complete a short purchase document. Thank you!

Christmas Parties: We will be having two celebrations for Christmas. One will be with all of
first grade and the other will be with just the Surfers. Both will require parent involvement,
so please keep your eyes open for those opportunities coming soon.
