By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

Read several food labels and identify the calories, serving size, nutrients, and ingredients on the
food label by writing them down on the Reading Food Labels Worksheet (National Standard 1,
MCHCF 3.10).

Opening (activator/instant activity)

Instant Activity - Have students take out a piece of paper and divide it into 2 columns. In the first
column have the students brainstorm and write down everything they think is on a food label.

Procedures Step by step description of teaching strategies/methods/pedagogy to be used.


(Include time frame for each activity, transitions, extensions/adaptations, cooperative learning
techniques jig saw, pair/share, etc.)
1. Instant Activity 3 minutes
2. A vs B Food Labels 5 minutes - Project the 2 food labels on the screen and tell the
students that they can only pick one of the food items to take with them to a deserted
island. Reveal the names of the products and go over why the students chose either
product to bring.
3. Presentation 5 minutes -
4. Reading Food Labels 20 minutes - Split the class up into their Notre Dame sports
partners and have them work on the Food Label Worksheet together
5. Class Discussion 10 Minutes - Go over the worksheet with the class and answer any
questions they might have
6. Closure 5 minutes - Have students take out the papers from the instant activity and write
down everything they learned that was on food labels.
