Density Problems

The document discusses using density formulas to solve various problems involving calculating density from mass and volume or vice versa. It provides 15 example problems involving substances like CO gas, wood, copper, ethanol, iron, granite, seawater, mixtures of liquids, mercury, and milk. The correct answers are given for each problem.

Use the density formula to solve the following problems.

1. What is the density in kg/m3 of CO gas if 0.196 g occupies a volume of 100 mL?
Answer: 1.96 kg/m3

2. A block of wood 3 cm on each side has a mass of 27 g. What is the density of

the block? Answer: 1.0 g/cm3

3. A 10.0 cm3 sample of copper has a mass of 89.6 g. What is the density of
copper? Answer: 8.96 g/cm3

4. Five mL of ethanol has a mass of 3.9 g, and 5.0 mL of benzene has a mass of 4.4
g. Which liquid is denser?
Answer : benzene

5. A sample of iron has dimensions of 2 cm x 3 cm x 2 cm. If the mass of this

rectangular-shaped object is 94 g, what is the density of iron? Answer: 7.83 g/cm3

6. You decide you want to carry a boulder home from the beach. It is 30
centimeters on each side, and so has a volume of 27,000 cm3. It is made of
granite, which has a typical density of 2.8 g/cm3. How much will this boulder
weigh? Answer: 740.88 N

7. Rocks are sometimes used along coasts to prevent erosion. If a rock needs to
weigh 2,000 kilograms (about 2 tons) in order not to be shifted by waves, how big
(what volume) does it need to be? You are using basalt, which has a typical
density of 3200 kg/m3. Answer: 0.625 m3

8. A golden-colored cube is handed to you. The person wants

you to buy it for $100, saying that is a gold nugget. You pull
out your old geology text and look up gold in the mineral table,
and read that its density is 19.3 g/cm3. You measure the cube
and find that it is 2 cm on each side, and weighs 40 g.
Should you buy it? Why or why not?

9. A solid ball has a mass of 100 grams and a radius of 2 cm. What is the density?

10. A solid cylinder has a radius of 2 cm and a length of 7 cm. It has a density of
3.1 g/cm3. What is the mass of the cylinder?

11. Seawater contains approximately 3.5% salt by weight. How much seawater (in
kg) contains 1 kg of salt? If the density of seawater is 1030 kg/m3, what is the
volume of seawater, in liters, containing 1 kg of salt?

12. The density of two liquids (A and B) is given as 1000 kg/m3 and 600 kg/m3,
respectively. The two liquids are mixed in a certain proportion and the density of
the resulting liquid is 850 kg/m3. How much of liquid B (in grams) does 1 kg of the
mixture contain? Assume the volume of the two liquids is additive when mixed.

13. A 200 mL graduated cylinder is filled halfway with methyl alcohol (density =
0.81 g/cm3), and then the other half is filled with oil (density = 0.72 g/cm3). What
is the mass (in grams) of the combined liquids?

14. To determine the inner radius of a uniform capillary tube, the tube is filled
with mercury. A column of mercury 3.0 cm long is found to have a mass of 0.50 g.
What is the inner radius of the tube in millimeters? The density of mercury is 13
600 kg/m3.

15. The volume of a 400 g of milk is 0.38 L. The butterfat that it contains
constitutes exactly 5% of the milk by weight and has a density of 0.90 g/cm3.
What is the density of the fat free milk in g/cm3?
