Lecture # 10: Ammar Tariq

A couple is defined as two parallel forces of equal magnitude but opposite direction separated by a perpendicular distance d. The moment of a couple is defined as either MO = Fd (scalar analysis) or MO = r x F (vector analysis) where r is any position vector from the line of action of -F to the line of action of F. The net external effect of a couple is zero net force but a magnitude of the net moment equal to F*d. Since a couple's moment only depends on the distance between forces, it is a free vector that can be placed anywhere on the body with the same external effect. Moments due to couples can be added using standard vector addition rules.

Couple
Moment of a Couple
A couple is defined as two parallel forces with the same
magnitude but opposite in direction separated by a
perpendicular distance d.
The moment of a couple is defined as
MO = F d (using a scalar analysis) or as
MO = r F (using a vector analysis).
Here r is any position vector from the line of action of F to the line of action of F.
Moment of a Couple (contd.)
The net external effect of a couple is that
the net force equals zero and the magnitude
of the net moment equals F *d.
Since the moment of a couple depends only
on the distance between the forces, the
moment of a couple is a free vector. It can
be moved anywhere on the body and have
the same external effect on the body.
Moments due to couples can be added
together using the same rules as adding any
vectors.
Moment of a Couple: Example Problem
1. Determine the resultant
couple

2. Determine couple moment

acting on the rod in Cartesian
vector notation
Moment of a Couple: Example Problem
3. Find, the magnitudes of the
forces P, F and the distance d,
when the resultant couple is
zero.

4. Find, the couple moment

acting on the pipe assembly
using Cartesian vector
notation.
