Summary
National Institute of Design (NID) offers admissions to aspirants in Bachelor of Design (BDes), Graduate Diploma
Programme in Design (GDPD) as well as Master of Design (MDes) programmes on the basis of their performance in NID
Design Aptitude T est. In order to secure admission in design programmes offered at National Institute of Design (NID)
aspirants need to take part in NID DAT (Prelims) and NID DAT (Mains). Only candidates who are shortlisted in NID DAT
(Prelims) can appear for NID DAT (Mains) admission round.

NID DAT (Prelims) is a written design aptitude test conducted by NID whereas NID DAT (Mains) comprises of a Studio T est
and Interview round. Candidates who are clear both these admission rounds are offered admission in design programmes
offered at colleges accepting NID entrance exam scores for admission. T otal number of seats on offer in BDes
programmes at NID is 100 whereas MDes seats for admissions are 275 in number.

Apart from BDes and MDes programmes, candidates can also pursue Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD) at
NID. A point to note here is that aspirants can pursue GDPD course at NID Vijayawada and NID Kurukshetra campus.

institutes under the DIPP, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India and offer four-year long Graduate Diploma

Candidates must possess any one of the below-mentioned minimum qualification in order to fulfill the eligibility criteria for
MDes programmes offered at different NID campuses:

Bachelors degree of minimum four-year duration in any discipline from a recognised university or college. However,
candidates must (have passed/ have appeared for/ be appearing for) the bachelor degree exams before July 2018.
OR
Bachelors degree of minimum three-year duration in any discipline from a recognised university or college. However,
candidates must have passed the bachelor degree exams before July 2017.

Full-time Diploma of minimum four-year duration in Design/ Fine Arts/ Applied Arts/ Architecture passed from a recognised

Indian Nationals in General Category 2018. Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 1988
are eligible to apply for admission.

Upper age limit for candidates is 33 years as on 30 June

Indian Nationals in Reserved Category (OBC-NCL, SC & ST ) 2018. Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 1985
are eligible to apply for admission.

Upper age limit for candidates is 35 years as on 30 June

Indian Nationals in PwD Reserved Category 2018. Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 1983
are eligible to apply for admission.

Upper age limit for candidates is 30 years as on 30 June

Foreign Nationals in Overseas (Supernumerary) Category 2018. Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 1988
are eligible to apply for admission.

Note: Foreign citizens (candidates holding citizenship of any country other than India) are eligible to apply for NID entrance
exam 2018 only under the overseas category, provided they fulfill all the eligibility criteria.

Process
Step 1: Fill NID Entrance Exam Application Form

Candidates need to fill their NID Design Aptitude T est 2018 application form on the official website of NID. T o apply
successfully for the exam, candidates need to first fill the application form online after which they need to upload their
supporting documents, signature and photograph.

Once aspirants complete the above mentioned process they need to pay NID admission application fee. Candidates can pay
the application fee for NID Entrance Exam 2018 either online (by Credit/Debit Card) or by Demand Draft which should be
drawn in favour of " All India Management Association" and should be payable at New Delhi. Aspirants need to fill all the
details regarding their DD in their online application form.

S t e p 2 : D o wnl o a d NID Ent r a nce Ex a m A dmit Ca r d

T he call letter/admit card for NID Entrance Exam is posted to the candidates specified address in the month of December.
Aspirants who do not receive the admit card for the entrance test need to contact the NID Admission Cell immediately. For
the second phase of the admission test, candidates can download their admit cards in the month of February/ March.

S t e p 3 : A ppe a r f o r NID Ent r a nce Ex a m 2 0 1 8 /NID D A T ( P r e l ims )

T he entrance exam for NID admissions is conducted in two steps which are NID DAT (Prelims) and NID DAT (Mains). In NID
DAT (Prelims) aspirants need to give a written test which comprises of objective type as well as subject questions. T his
entrance exam conducted by NID is of 3 hours duration.

First of all NID announces the result for NID DAT . Candidates who get shortlisted in this round need to further appear for
NID DAT (Mains). Candidates can check their result for NID entrance exam on the official website of the exam by providing
details such as their email address, date of birth, roll number/application number.

Step 5: Appear f or NID DAT (Mains) 2018

Candidates who make it to the cut-off for NID DAT (Prelims), need to further appear for NID DAT (Mains) wherein
authorities conduct a Studio T est and Interview round. In the Studio T est for NID admissions aspirants are given hands-on
practical assignments which they need to complete in the stipulated time.

Step 6: Check NID Final Merit List

On the basis of a candidate's performance in NID DAT (Prelims) and NID DAT (Mains), that is, the Studio T est and Interview
round, the final merit list for NID admissions is prepared. Aspirants can check the merit list for NID admissions on the official

candidates can go through the student feedback on NID DAT 2017 below:
NID DAT (Prelims) 2017 took place on January 8, 2017. T he first phase of National Institute of Design admissions 2017
NID DAT (Prelims) was held across 23 test cities in India. Admission process for NID admissions requires aspirants to appear
for two rounds which are NID DAT (Prelims) and NID DAT (Mains). T hus, aspirants seeking admission in Bachelor of Design
(BDes), Master of Design (MDes) and GDPD programmes need to appear for NID DAT (Prelims) which is basically a written
entrance test followed by NID DAT (Mains) which comprises of a Studio T est and Interview round. Candidates who clear all
these rounds are only shortlisted for admission at colleges that accept NID Entrance Exam scores.
NID Entrance Exam was of three hours duration. In NID DAT (Prelims) candidates were evaluated out of a total of 100 marks
and the test paper was divided into two parts, that is, Section A and Section B. Students shared that NID DAT (Prelims) for
admissions 2017-2018 was easy and students who took the exam for both MDes as well as BDes course admissions shared

NID application process usually commences in October/November each year. Aspirants can fill NID application form online
on the official website of National Institute of Design (NID). T hus, candidates can only fill NID entrance exam application
form online on the official website of the design school.
Step 1: Reg ister f or NID DAT
T o fill NID entrance exam application form, aspirants need to first create a login ID. For doing so, candidates need to provide
details such as name, gender, email address, educational qualification, mobile number, date of birth, nationality and
reservation category.
Candidates need to ensure that the email ID and mobile number provided by them to create the NID login ID has been
functional for at least a year.
Step 2: Fill NID Entrance Exam 2018 Application Form
When aspirants complete the signup process, they will have to login to their NID admission account by using the email ID and
date of birth mentioned by them at the time of signup. Once this is done, candidates can access NID DAT application form.

In the application form for NID admission process 2018, aspirants are given the choice to select two disciplines in which they
want to apply for admission. NIDs official website explains the same by stating: For applicants applying to undergraduate
programmes, Please make a choice for the specific programme (i) only BDes (ii) only GDPD (iii) both BDes and GDPD.
Please note that once the payment formalities are completed, this choice cannot be altered. On the other hand, in MDes
application form for NID admissions, aspirants need to select MDes course in the application form.

NID Entrance Exam Pattern: In order to secure admissions in design programmes on offer at NID, aspirants need to clear
two stages which are:

T he Design Aptitude T est (DAT ) conducted by NID is a three hour duration exam and the total weightage of the test is 100
marks. T his is a pen and paper based test. T he medium of instruction of NID DAT 2018 is English and the test paper
comprises of both objective as well as subjective questions. NID DAT (Prelims)is conducted to test an aspirant on the below
mentioned abilities:

NID Entrance Exam comprises of questions on topics like visual design, subjects of design, environmental sensitivity,
thematic colour arrangement, memory drawing, proportions and perspective, drawing skills, animation and abstract
symbolism, general mental ability, composition and communication skills as well as creative ability of an aspirant.

NID DAT 2018 is divided into two parts, that is, I and II. NID DAT Part I will consist of Multiple Choice Objective T ype
questions and its weightage is 70 marks. T his part of the paper has one or more correct answers. On the other hand Part
II of this exam has subjective type questions and the weightage of this section is 30 marks.

In NID Studio T est, aspirants will be evaluated out of a total of 100 marks. Duration of the test will be three hours. T he
medium of instruction of NID Studio T est is English. Candidates who are shortlisted in the Studio T est round will only be
allowed to appear for the the personal interview round.

Studio T est f or MDes Admissions: T his test for MDes admissions at NID will be held separately for each specialisation
(that is, the course for which an aspirant has applied for admission). T he studio test will comprise of different sections
wherein questions of different formats (like hands on drawing/sketching, hands-on model making, group discussions, etc) will
be asked. Duration of the test will be three hours.

NID Studio T est for MDes admissions will carry a total of 100 marks. T he test paper will be in English language.

Aspirants can download NID DAT admit card online from NID entrance exams official website. Candidates need to note that
NID Entrance Exam admit card would only be issued to them if they have successfully completed and duly submitted NID

National Institute of Design (NID) conducts design aptitude test (DAT ) in the month of January each year. Following the
exam, the design school releases NID entrance exam answer key on the official website of the design entrance test.
Candidates are informed that they can view the answer key for NID DAT exam online only.
Once, NID answer keys are released aspirants are given the option to raise objections for any question or answer that they
find to be wrong. Candidates need to raise these objections online on the official portal of NID. Aspirants are informed that
they will be allowed to raise objections only on the provisional NID DAT 2018 answer key. Once NID officials go through the

NID DAT Marking Scheme

In order to determine the score in NID Entrance Exam, aspirants need to know the marking scheme of the design entrance
exam. Maximum marks that aspirants can secure in NID DAT exam is 100. T he test paper of NID Entrance Exam is such that
it comprises of 70 objective type questions and 30 subjective, short answer type questions. T here is no negative marking in

Prelims result for BDes, MDes and GDPD course is usually declared in the month of February each year. Only candidates who
meet NID DAT Prelims cut-off are eligible to take part in Studio T est and Interview round for NID admissions.
Separate cut-offs for NID entrance exam are released for candidates belonging to different categories, such as General,
General-Physically Handicapped (General- PH), Other Backward Classes- Non Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL), Other Backward
Classes- Non Creamy Layer- Physically Handicapped (OBC-NCL-PH), Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Caste- Physically
Handicapped (SC-PH), Scheduled T ribe (ST ) and Scheduled T ribe- Physically Handicapped (ST -PH).
NID DAT Mains Result
Few aspects that aspirants need to pay attention to with respect to the result for NID DAT Mains for BDes, MDes and GDPD
course admissions is as follows:
For NID DAT Mains f or MDes course admissions: Based on the category-wise merit list of DAT (Prelims); the number of
candidates shortlisted for DAT (Mains) in each category and discipline is five times the number of available seats in each
category and respective discipline.
For NID DAT Mains f or BDes/GDPD course admissions: Based on the category-wise merit list of DAT (Pelims); the number
of candidates shortlisted for DAT (Mains) in each category is 3.5 times the number of available seats in each category in the
respective discipline.
Below, candidates can view NID cut offs for 2016 and 2017. NID cutoffs are determined in such a way that the score of the
last candidate who has been offered admission in a particular course in a given year are considered to be NID DAT cutoff.
Candidates are informed that all the scores mention in the table below are evaluated out of 100.

NID DAT (Prelims) Result for MDes : 15 Feb 2018
NID result for BDes and MDes entrance exams is declared on National Institute of Designs official website. NID entrance
exam result is usually conducted in the month of January and result for the entrance test is announced in the month of
February each year.
T o check NID DAT 2018 result, candidates need to fill details like their registered email address, date of birth and roll
number/application number on the official website of NID entrance exam. NID DAT merit list is prepared category-wise, that
is, different lists are released for General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST and PH category candidates. NIDs official website informs:
From the total number of applicants who have appeared for DAT , the number of candidates to be called for Stage 2 and
Stage 3 of the exam will be calculated as no less than 3 X N where N stands for number of seats in that category for that
programme or discipline.
How to Check NID DAT 2018 Result
Step 1: Go to the official website of National Institute of Design (NID).
Step 2: Click on NID Result tab/link mentioned on the official website.
Step 3: Enter registered email address, date of birth and roll number/application number.
Step 4 : Click on Submit button.
Step 5: View result and download NID rank & scorecard.
Step 6: T ake print of NID entrance exam result (rank and score)
In a situation in which two or more aspirants have secured the same (total) marks in NID DAT (Mains) for BDes and GDPD
course admissions then tie-break in such a scenario is done as per the below mentioned criteria:
1. Higher rank is assigned to an aspirant who has higher marks in NID DAT Mains.
2. Higher rank is assigned to an aspirant who has obtained higher marks in NID DAT Prelims - Part A exam.
3. Higher rank is assigned to an aspirant who has obtained higher marks in DAT Prelims Part B exam.
4. Higher rank is assigned to an aspirant who has obtained higher marks in DAT Mains Question number 3 (carrying 40 marks).
National Institute of Design (NID) admission process requires aspirants to clear two rounds NID DAT (Prelims) and NID
DAT (Mains). Here, NID DAT Prelims comprises of the written entrance exam. Candidates who clear this admission round
are then eligible to take part in NID DAT Mains which comprises of the Studio T est and Personal Interview round. Candidates
who clear all these NID admission rounds are then offered admission in colleges accepting NID entrance exam scores for
admission.
T hus, Candidates who make it to the merit list of NID DAT Prelims then need to appear for Studio T est and Interview round
as per the schedule shared by NID authorities. Final merit list for NID admissions 2018 will be prepared by calculating the
scores obtained by students in each stage of NID admission process.
