Lightning Arrester

Lightning arrestors are used in substations to protect high voltage equipment such as transformers and circuit breakers from over-voltages caused by lightning strikes, electromagnetic pulses, and switching operations by diverting surge currents to ground. They provide a low impedance path for surges and come in different types depending on the application. Modern arrestors mostly use zinc oxide technology to provide this protection without gaps.

LIGHTNING ARRESTER:

Lightning Arrestor in 400kV Substation

Lightning arresters are use to protect high voltage equipment in substation, such as
transformers, circuit breakers and bushings, against the effect of over-voltage caused
by incoming surges.

Such over-voltages can be caused by a direct or nearby lightning strike, an

electromagnetic pulse, electrostatic discharge, or switching operations in the power
supply system as well as in devices.

Some over voltages are very high in energy. The current from the surge is diverted
through the arrester, in most cases to earth.

Effective overvoltage protection requires different surge arrester types to be used

according to the particular application.

Lightning or surge arresters are always connected in shunt to the equipment to be

protected, they provide a low impedance path for the surge current to the ground.

Mostly in present days zinc oxide (ZnO) gapless arresters are in use.
