This lesson plan teaches 7th grade students about figurative language. Students will work in teams to identify examples of similes, metaphors, hyperboles and other types of figurative language. The activity uses a competitive element to engage students as they drag and drop examples into the correct categories. At the end, individual students will provide examples or fill in sentences using figurative language to reinforce the concepts. The lesson leverages a Smartboard presentation to display examples and categories to students.

pronunciations of unfamiliar words and phrases within authentic

texts.
c) Identify and analyze figurative language.
Activity Begin using slides 1-4 and getting students verbally and cognitively
involved by asking them to tell me what they remember about
each of the types of figurative language listed.
Next, after talking about some examples, I will separate the class
into 4 teams and have teams 1 and 2 line up. 1 student at a time
for each team will come up and when I say go, they will drag ONE
example of a simile or metaphor and place it in the correct section.
If their answer is incorrect, they can adjust accordingly. After the
first two student are done, they will move to the end of the line
and the next student will come up. Repeat this process until all the
example are used up. There is no winner, but the students will
enjoy the competition. At the end of the lesson, I will restart the
slide and go through each example asking the class with category
the examples fall under in order to allow all of the student to see
each example. I will review slide 6-7. On slide 8, have teams 3 and
4 come up and do the same thing as teams 1 and 2 did initially.
Upon completion, we will check their answers and then review
with the whole class. All students are rewarded with a piece of
small candy. I will again review slide 9 and on slide 10, ask 4
students to come up and write examples of hyperboles. I will
review slide 11. On slide 12, I will have students come up
individually to fill-in the sentences on the board with an
appropriate response. On slide 13, I will move the answers to the

appropriate place as students give me to correct answer, or just

have 1 student come up and do it, in order to keep the end of the
lesson calm.
