Wk1.Drugs & Such. Leader Guide

1) The small group discussion focuses on applying biblical principles to "gray areas" like tattoos, drinking, smoking, and partying. 2) The discussion questions explore what the Bible says about these topics and whether they can be done to glorify God or influence others positively. Members are encouraged to consider biblical commands to submit to authority and set a good example. 3) At the end, members make a list of what they will and will not do regarding these topics and why, based on their discussion. They then split into prayer groups to share needs and pray for each other.

Small Group LEADER’S GUIDE

SEX, DRUGS & ROCK N’ ROLL Mini-Series

WEEK 1: DRUGS
DRUGS & SUCH:
 The point of this discussion is to equip our students to make God-honoring decisions when they come across ‘gray areas’ in life.
In other words, figuring out how to apply biblical principles to life when the Bible doesn’t clearly say ‘yes’ or ‘no.’
ICE BREAKER: (3 Options)
 The ‘If You Really Knew Me’ activity:
o Everyone takes a turn saying, ‘If you really knew me, you’d know…” and then completes the phrase by saying
something interesting about themselves. The goal is to learn more about each other & progressively get deeper as the
circle goes around multiple times.
 What is your favorite thing to do and why?
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
1. If it applies, take some time & talk about the goals you set last week with the Discipline of Worship.
2. For you, what will determine when, why and whether or not you’ll get a tattoo? What would make it not okay for a Christian
to get a tattoo? What would make it okay to get one? If you answered ‘nothing’ to either of these, explain why.
o Key discussion points:
 Tattoos will draw attention forever. Is that attention pointed at you or God?
 1 CORINTHIANS 10:31 (Do everything with the goal of glorifying God)
 2 TIMOTHY 3:1-5 (People shouldn’t love themselves more than God)
 Submission to authority: Whatever your parents say right now goes.
 EPHESIANS 6:1-3 (Obeying parents)
3. As a Christian, do you think drinking is okay? Why or why not? If you said ‘yes,’ how do you know when enough is enough? Is a
‘buzz’ okay?
 Key discussion points:
 Obeying the law (21)
 Drinking is not a sin, getting drunk is. Everything in moderation
 EPHESIANS 5:18 (Command not to get drunk)
 LUKE 7:33-34 (Jesus says He’s drank wine before)
 JOHN 2:1-11 (Jesus’ first miracle: Water to Wine)
 Sometimes it’s appropriate to remove freedoms from our lives when they can negatively affect others.
 1 CORINTHIANS 8:8-10 (Don’t do anything that could cause someone else to sin)
4. Is it okay for Christians to smoke? Is smoking a sin? One way or the other, how do you know?
 Key discussion points:
 Smoking is not a sin, but it is highly addictive and very unhealthy.
 If our culture views it as ‘dirty’ and ‘unchristian,’ why give yourself that disadvantage in sharing Christ.
 1 CORINTHIANS 6:12 (Do not be mastered by anything)
5. Read 1 PETER 2:13-15 (God wants us to submit to authority over us) & EPHESIANS 6:1-3 (Obey your parents). They talk about
submitting to authority. Discuss whether or not it’s okay for you to get a tattoo/drink/smoke/party right now, based on the
authorities you are currently under. And what about when you move out, or turn 18, what will dictate your decisions then?
 Key discussion points:
 Obey laws and parents.
 When laws and parents don’t apply, you have to KNOW what you can do and why.
o Will you base that on the bible or on your mood or whim?
o 1 PETER 3:15 (Scripture is for training)
6. The following verses talk about considering how our decisions influence other people and being a good example. Can you
drink/smoke/party/get tattoos in a way that reflects Christ to those around you? Why or why not? Here’s a related questions:
can you do any of these to the glory of God? Read the verses and talk about it.
 1 CORINTHIANS 10:31-33 (Seek the good of others in your decisions for yourself)
 1 CORINTHIANS 8:8-10 (Don’t do anything that will make weaker Christians mess up)
 1 TIMOTHY 4:12 (Set a good example for other believers)
 MARK 9:42 (There will be consequences for causing others to sin)

1
7. Drinking, smoking, even partying and tattooing can become addictions. Read 1 CORINTHIANS 6:12 and discuss whether the
potential for addiction means don’t touch, or know when to stop. If you say know when to stop, specify when that is, and
what you should do if you find yourself addicted.
8. As you discuss with your group, make a list somewhere on this paper of specific things that you will and will not do and why.

PRAYER GROUPS:
 Students share prayer needs, especially making worship measurable this week. Pray for each other.
