Lord, source of eternal life and truth, give to Your shepherd, the Pope,
a spirit of courage and right judgement, a spirit of knowledge and love.
By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his care may he, as successor
to the apostle Peter and vicar of Christ, build Your church into a sacrament
of unity, love, and peace for all the world.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns
with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

December 16, 2017
Our Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols now has been an annual event for
fourteen years. Since 2004 many people look forward to this service each
year. If this is your first visit to St. John Cantius, I hope it is the first of
many. If you are a regular, I am delighted you are back with us.
In this Advent season let us not forget the ultimate gift God bestowed
upon us. Christs birth not only frees us from the slavery of this world, but
also offers us the invitation to be children of the living God and dwellers in
the eternal Kingdom. Many individuals have assisted in the preparations
for Lessons and Carols and it would be impossible to thank each and every
one so I will indicate just a few. I thank all of the members of our choirs
and choir directors for their dedication and diligent work in preparing the
sacred music. Many thanks to the members of the Magnificat Choir and
their parents for their dedication to our music program. Let me also recog-
nize our Readers and those who serve at the Altar. Let me thank those who
are members of the Festival Committee who spend time on marketing,
publicity, ushering, parking, editing, research, photocopying, mailing, and
many other tasks. God bless all who in any way promoted this special
event.
As with any undertaking of this magnitude, there are many costs. I wish to
thank the businesses that have supported this and other programs at St.
John Cantius Parish. Many thanks also to the Patrons of Sacred Music who
have supported us and without whose financial assistance these Services
would not be possible. Finally, a heartfelt thanks to all of you who attend
Lessons and Carols. Your attendance gives great encouragement to us and
shows us your support of what we do here at St. Johns. So as we approach
the great feast of Christmas, let us glimpse the unfolding of the mystery of
Christs birth through Sacred Scripture and Sacred Song. My best to all of
you in these final days of preparation for Christmas.
Sincerely in Christ,
THE HEART-IN-WAITING

WELCOME
St. John Cantius Parish is pleased to welcome you this evening for our
annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. We are honored to have The
Honorable Piotr Semeniuk, Vice Consul of the Consulate General of the
Republic of Poland in Chicago, in attendance this evening. We also
welcome members of the U.S. Armed Forces, and our Military Veterans
and their families, who are our special guests tonight.
Donations to the Patrons of Sacred Music for Lessons & Carols go to
support our sacred music ministry at St. John Cantius Church. For those
unable to make a financial contribution, we welcome you and ask the
help and support of your prayers. We thank you for your generosity.
St. Augustine, who, in his Sermon on Psalm 72 says, He who sings well
prays twice, experienced the importance of music in the spiritual life.
He remarks: How I wept deeply moved by your hymns, songs and the
voices that echoed through your Church! What emotion I experienced
in them! Those sounds flowed into my ears, distilling the truth in my
heart. A feeling of devotion surged within me, and tears streamed down
my face tears that did me good. (Conf. 9, 6, 14: PL 32, 769-770). We
hope you will find this a deeply spiritual way of preparing for Christs
Advent as you hear the story of the coming of the Messiah, and as you
heartily join in singing.

forgive those that trespass against us; And lead us not into
temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen.

FIRST LESSON: GENESIS 3.
God tells sinful Adam that he has lost the life of Paradise
and that his seed will bruise the serpents head.
Reader: Master Gus Toler
And when they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in paradise at the
afternoon air, Adam and his wife hid themselves from the face of the Lord
God, midst the trees of paradise. And the Lord God called Adam, and
said to him: Where art thou? And he said: I heard thy voice in paradise;
and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself. And He said to
him: And who hath told thee that thou wast naked, but that thou hast eat-
en of the tree whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldst not eat? And
Adam said: The woman, whom thou gavest me to be my companion, gave
me of the tree, and I did eat. And the Lord God said to the woman: Why
hast thou done this? And she answered: The serpent deceived me, and I
did eat. And the Lord God said to the serpent: Because thou hast done
this thing, thou art cursed among all cattle, and beasts of the earth: upon
thy breast shalt thou go, and earth shalt thou eat all the days of thy life. I
will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed:
she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel. And to Ad-
am He said: Because thou hast hearkened to the voice of thy wife, and hast
eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee, that thou shouldst not eat,
cursed is the earth in thy work: with labour and toil shalt thou eat thereof
all the days of thy life. Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to thee, and
thou shalt eat the herbs of the earth. In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat
bread till thou return to the earth out of which thou wast taken: for dust
thou art, and into dust thou shalt return.

SECOND LESSON: GENESIS 22.
God promises to Abraham that in his seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.
Reader: Elvis Castro
And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven,
saying: By My own self have I sworn, saith the Lord: because thou hast
done this thing, and hast not spared thy only begotten son for My sake: I
will bless thee, and I will multiply thy seed as the stars of heaven, and as the
sand that is by the sea shore; thy seed shall possess the gates of their ene-
mies. And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because
thou hast obeyed My voice.
Que danse de joie notre univers, Let our universe dance with joy;
Que le monde, chantez Nol, car li vient, Let the world sing Nol, for He comes,
Le Dieu qui refait nos jeunesses. The God who restores our youth.
Conseil merveilleux, Dieu fort, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Pre jamais, Prince de paix.

The congregation stands.
The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: to them that
dwelt in the Region of the shadow of death, light is risen. For a CHILD IS
BORN to us, and a Son is given to us, and the government is upon His
shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, God the
Mighty, the Father of the world to come, the Prince of Peace. His empire
shall be multiplied, and there shall be no end of peace: He shall sit upon the
19
throne of David, and upon His kingdom; to establish it and strengthen it
with judgment and with justice, from henceforth and for ever: the zeal of
the Lord of hosts will perform this.
CAROL: TORCHES
Torches, torches, run with torches all the way to Bethlehem!
Christ is born and now lies sleeping; come and sing your song to him.
Ah, Roro, Roro, my baby, Ah, Roro, my love, Roro;
Sleep you well, my hearts own darling, while we sing you our Roro.
Sing, my friends, and make you merry, joy and mirth and joy again;
Lo, he lives, the King of Heaven, now and evermore. Amen.
CAROL: GAUDETE
Gaudete! Gaudete! Rejoice! Rejoice!
Christus est natus ex Maria Virgine, Christ is born of the Virgin Mary,
Gaudete! Rejoice!

The darling of the world is come,
And fit it is, we find a room to welcome him.
The nobler part of all the house here, is the heart.
Which we will give Him; And bequeath this holly, and this ivy wreath,
To do him honour, whos our King, and Lord of all this revelling.
What sweeter music can we bring than a carol, for to sing
The birth of this our Heavenly King?
O Christmas tree! O Christmas tree! How richly God has decked thee.
O Christmas tree! O Christmas tree! How richly God has decked thee.
Thou bidst us true and faithful be, and trust in God unchangingly.
O Christmas tree! O Christmas tree! How richly God has decked thee.
What is this light so fair, so tender breaking upon our wondring eyes?
Never the Morning Star so radiant followed his course oer eastern skies.
What is this light so fair, so tender breaking upon our wondring eyes?

Shepherds, O haste with eager footsteps seek the Saviour, born today.
Low at His feet we lay our treasure, hearts adoration, love for aye.
Shepherds, O haste with eager footsteps seek the Saviour, born today.
The tree of life my soul hath seen laden with fruit and always green.
The trees of nature fruitless be compared with Christ the apple tree.
His beauty doth all things excel by faith I know but neer can tell.
The glory which I now can see in Jesus Christ the apple tree.
For happiness I long have sought and pleasure dearly I have bought.
I missed of all but now I see tis found in Christ the apple tree.
Im weary with my former toil here I will sit and rest a while.
Under the shadow I will be of Jesus Christ the apple tree.
This fruit does make my soul to thrive; it keeps my dying faith alive,
Which makes my soul in haste to be with Jesus Christ the apple tree.
