Required Courses and College Area Requirements
THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE COMPLETING THIS WORKSHEET:
Links to external resources on the web have been provided at various places in this worksheet. These links are denoted by the
color blue and an underline (example = sample link). An available internet connection and web browser (Netscape Navigator,
Internet Explorer) are required in order for these links to work.
Before completing this worksheet, please read Chapter 6 in the Undergraduate Record and familiarize yourself with the Arts &
Sciences Undergraduate homepage.
All required courses and College area requirements must be taken at U.Va. for a letter grade, unless AP credit or Transfer credit
for work done PRIOR to enrolling at U.Va. is used, or you are exempt by virtue of your Achievement Test scores.
One course may simultaneously fulfill two requirements (two area requirements; or one area requirement and a major or minor
requirement, etc.).
One course may fulfill three requirements if the third requirement is the Second Writing Requirement.

COMPOSITION: There are several options.


ENWR 101: if you entered the University prior to fall 1999 OR
ENWR 105 and 106: (6 credits) for students who had a score of 460 or less (pre-May 1998) or 480 or less (post-May 1998) on the
SAT II test OR
ENWR 110 (3 credits) for students whose SAT II score was 470-720 (pre-May 1998) or 490-660 (post-May 1998) OR
STS 101: if you are currently a student in SEAS OR
ENWR 210 (3 credits) for students whose SAT II Writing exam score was 670-710, OR
To see if you are exempt, refer to the Colleges degree requirements policy.

SECOND-WRITING REQUIREMENT: 3 credits (no transfer credit permitted).


You can find a list of courses that fulfill this requirement by doing the Detailed Search of the Course Offering Directory. Submit a
Statement of Completion form when you complete this requirement. The form is available in the lobby of Garrett hall and online for
download. State on it that you are an "IUT applicant" and have the instructor forward it to Garrett Hall. Note to SEAS applicants: Some
STS 200-level courses might meet the requirement; check the form.

Literature - Classics, Comparative Literature, English (except ENWR 105, 106, 110, 210, 270, 282, 370, 371, 372, 380, and ENSP
106), and Foreign Literature (Asian and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures [except ARAB 225, 226,323/523, and 324/524] French,
German, Slavic Languages and Literatures, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese courses in translation and all courses above the 202 level.
[above 232 in French, 206 in Chinese, and 212 in Portuguese.])

Fine Arts- ANTH 237, Studio Art, Art History, Drama, Music (except MUSI 150-169, 351-369, and any courses awarding fewer than
3 credits), and selected Architectural History courses AR H 100, 101, 102, 150, 203.

Moral, Philosophical, and Religious Perspectives - Political Theory (PLPT), Philosophy, and Religious Studies.

SOCIAL SCIENCES: 6 credits or two courses of 3 or more credits each, from two different departments
or programs.
Afro-American and African Studies, Anthropology, Economics, EVSC 230, Politics (except PLPT), Linguistics (200 level or above),
Psychology, Sociology, and Studies in Women and Gender (SWAG). Excluded are Foreign Language and Literature courses taught in
these departments.

NATURAL SCIENCE and/or MATH: 12 credits from at least 2 departments.


Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences (except EVSC 230), Mathematics (except MATH 100 and 103), Physics, Statistics,
and ECON 371. For purposes of this requirement the Dept. of Mathematics and the Department of Statistics are considered to be "one
department". Excluded are all courses numbered 000T. Note to SEAS applicants: courses with the following mnemonics may be entered
here: APMA (except APMA 100); PHYS; CHEM.

OTHER COURSES: MAJOR & ELECTIVES

CREDITS IN THE COLLEGE: a minimum of 102 credits of the 120 needed for the B.A. must be courses
in the liberal arts and considered "inside" the College.
List below all courses you have taken in the College or that are Arts and Sciences courses you took at another institution and that are
not already listed under the various required courses. List also the courses below which are exceptions and although they are offered in
other schools, they count as "Inside" the College:

credits with no more than 1 credit per semester), PLSK (limit: 2 credits), ROTC (limit: 12 credits), USEM, EDHS (limit: 6 credits, including
EDHS 450 listed in shaded box above.)
