Assist Devices

The document outlines the units covered in a course on assist devices and their outcomes. The 5 units cover: 1) cardiac assist devices like intra-aortic balloon pumps and auxiliary ventricles, 2) hemodialyzers including artificial kidneys and membrane dialysis, 3) hearing aids and tests like audiograms and techniques like masking, 4) prosthetic and orthotic devices including arm replacements and functional electrical stimulation, and 5) recent trends like transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulators and biofeedback. The outcome is for students to be able to explain the functioning and use of electromechanical units that can restore normal function of temporarily or permanently defective organs.
