1. A ball was travelling at a constant speed of 5ms-1. A force of 10N acted on the ball for 5 seconds,
making the ball move faster at 10ms-1. What is the mass of the ball?

2. A block of mass 3kg is placed on a rough surface and is pulled by a force F as shown in the diagram
below. The friction between the block and the surface is 3N.
a) Find the acceleration of the block when F equals 6N.
b) What is the magnitude of F when the block moves with constant speed?
c) If F is reduced to 2N when the block is moving, find the acceleration of the block.

a. The lift starts to rise with acceleration of 5 ms -2
b. The lift goes up with uniform velocity

13. A helicopter has a mass of 1000kg. The rotation of the rotor blades can produce a maximum upward force of
15000N.
a. What upward force must be produced by the rotation of the rotor blades to keep the unloaded
helicopter at a constant height?
b. What is the maximum upward acceleration of the helicopter?
c. The helicopter cannot lift-off if it is loaded with goods of mass 500kg. Explain why.

14. A rocket of mass 107 kg is launched. The thrust of the rocket is 1.5 x 108 N.
a. Calculate the acceleration of the rocket when launching.
b. A spaceman of mass 70kg is standing on a compression balance at the moment of launching, what is
the reading of the balance?

15. Two scale pans each of mass 0.1kg are attached to a thread which passes over a smooth pulley. A mass of
0.5kg is placed on one pan and a mass of 0.2kg is placed on the other.
a. Find the acceleration of the system.
b. Find the tension in the thread.
c. Find the force each mass exerts on the scale pan

16. A 1kg mass is used to pull a 3kg trolley on a horizontal table as shown. The trolley moves with uniform speed.
a. Find:
i. The resultant force acting on the trolley,
ii. The tension in the string,
iii. The frictional force acting on the trolley.
b. Now, the 1kg mass is removed and one end of the table is lifted so that it makes an angle Ɵ with the
horizontal. Assume that the frictional force remains unchanged.
i. If the trolley moves with uniform speed, find the angle Ɵ.
ii. If Ɵ=30o, find the acceleration of the trolley.

pulley. Initially, block B rests on the floor and block A is 4m above the floor.
a. A mass of 1kg is then placed on block A. Find:
i. The acceleration of the system
ii. The time taken for block A to reach the floor
iii. The velocity of the system just before block A hits the floor
