Fluid Challenge Algorithm - 2006

This algorithm outlines steps for providing a fluid challenge to critical care patients with suspected reduced circulatory volume. It involves giving 200ml of fluid and checking for signs of clinical improvement or increases in stroke volume or central venous pressure within 5 minutes. If signs of improvement are seen, another 200ml can be given and reassessed. If no improvement is seen after two challenges, fluid administration should be stopped and medical advice sought to consider other circulatory support options.
