Graph of PH Versus Volume of Naoh: Acidity and Alkalinity 1.0 Data 1.1 Acidity

This document discusses acidity and alkalinity as determined by pH measurements. Graphs show the pH of a sample as the volume of NaOH or HCl is increased. The acidity was determined to be 23 ppm CaCO3 based on the volume of NaOH needed to reach a pH of 8.33. The alkalinity was determined to be 16 ppm CaCO3 based on the volume of HCl needed to reach a pH of 4.5. The document concludes that pH is important for determining if water is polluted or poses a danger.

2.0 Importance and usage of pH measurement.

pH value is used to determine the acidity and alkalinity of a substance. This

measurement plays an important role in environment as it can be used as an
indicator to find out if water is polluted or brings any danger to the consumers. Too
much acidity or alkalinity in water supply can eventually destroy ecosystem.

3.0 Discussion and conclusion.

There are some factors that may affect the experiment. One of the factors is the
existence of parallax error. The reading taken from the burette when titrating the
sample was not parallel to the eye level. Besides that, the apparatus might be not
rinse thoroughly with distilled water before usage.

As a conclusion, when the volume of an acid (HCL) increases, the pH value of a

substances decreases and when the volume of an alkaline (NaOH) increases, the pH
value of a substance increases. The pH value is very important in determining
whether or not a substance is acidic, alkaline or neutral. Also, it helps you determine
how dangerous said substance is.
