Analysis of Continuous Beams by Moment Distribution Method Using Spreadsheets
using Spreadsheets
Aim :
To develop a spread sheet for calculating the end moments for three span continuous beam
using moment distribution method.
Procedure:
1. Open a new spread sheet and enter the input data - spans of the beam sections, loading
on the span and relative moment of inertia ratio of the various sections.
2. Calculate the relative stiffness of all members at various joints by entering the
formula in the cell and referring to the cell containing the values of moment of inertia
and spans . Obtain the distribution factor of all members as DF = ki/∑ki.
3. Enter the joints, members meeting at the joint and distribution factors of the members
in consecutive rows of the sheet.
4. In the adjacent row, calculate the fixed end moments for all spans.
5. Balance the moments at the joints by applying balancing moment and distribute the
balancing moment to the members meeting at the joints in proportion of their
distribution factors. Balancing moment for each member is -(DF*Net unbalanced
moment) and stored in the adjacent row.
6. Balancing moments applied to the member ends are carried over to the far ends. The
carry over moments are calculated in the row immediately adjacent to the row
containing balancing moments.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 by copying the rows several times till the individual values
become small.
8. Calculate the final end moments by summing up the rows containing fixed end
moments, balancing moments and carry over moments.
Result
Spreadsheet has been developed for finding out the end moments of a continuous
beam by moment distribution method.
