Performance Objective 3: Given a set of elapsed time word problems and pre-drawn number lines, students will label number lines and solve the word problems with 80% accuracy.
Time 60 minutes
Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities Review how to find the start time, change of time and end of time in a word problem. Solve this problem with students. • Jill started skating at 11:30. She skated for two hours. What time did she finish skating? Solve using a number line.
Step 2: Content Presentation Show the Kahn Academy video “Telling Time Using a Number Line”. Students will solve word problems to the nearest five minutes. Solve the problems together with students on the Teacher Resource Sheet Lesson 3
Step 3: Learner Participation Students will draw and label number line on whiteboards to solve projected elapsed time word problems. Answer any questions that students may have. One way to solve on a number line to the nearest five minutes, you could have students put hash marks by 5’s on their number line.
Step 4: Assessment Solve the problems together in the student book, Lesson 3.
Step 5: Follow-Through Activities Students will login to Prodigy Math to play a game to practice elapsed time skills. Number lines are a tool that can be used within the game.
