Background of The Study

This document provides background information on batteries and discusses two studies on using fruits as alternative batteries. It explains that batteries store chemical energy that is converted to electricity, and that there are two main types of batteries based on their electrolyte. One study found that lemons generated the most electric current out of several fruits tested but it was not enough to power a light bulb alone. A local Philippine study then discovered that whole fruits like potatoes could power simple devices like calculators when combined with metals like zinc and copper. The document suggests further study on which fruits can produce enough electricity as an alternative power source for areas affected by power outages in the Philippines.

Background of Study

Batteries store chemical energy and transform this energy into electricity. This is how batteries
make gadgets and electronic devices work, like mobile phones, MP3 players, flashlights, and a whole
lot more. There are two main types of batteries based on the type of electrolyte it uses. There is what
we call the wet cell, which makes use of liquid electrolytes in the form of a solution, and there is also
what we call dry cell, which makes use of electrolytes in the form of paste. There are many more
types of batteries available on the market now, like carbon-zinc celll and mercury cell etc. According
to Novella Thompson (2014) Citrus acid is the substance that imparts a tart flavor to fruits like oranges
and lemons. When combined with water, the citrus acid ionises. Since the juice in fruits is largely
water, a piece of fresh fruit is packed with ions. Combining those ions with strips of metal triggers a
chemical reaction that can produce electricity.

Globally Kalyn K. (2005) from Mililani, Hawaii who conducted a study that identifies which
fruit will light a light bulb the brightest. Her experiment result shows that the fruit with the most acid
has a greater chance of conducting electricity. The fruit lemon generated the most electric current,
but it was not enough to light a light bulb by itself. It took two lemons to light the bulb, and three to
make it bright. These results show that the electricity found in fruits are not enough to be practical.
In the national setting, a local study conducted by Maron Franz Tabor, Trevorr del Socorro Jerom
Josef, John Vincent Nueva featured in juniorzone .The study is about the discovery of fruits or
vegetable as an alternative battery. At first, the it didn’t generate battery to the alarm clock because
only a slice of fruit was used in the experiment. But after trying out the three whole, the calculator
worked out and can be concluded as alternative source of battery. The researchers also had problem
when they used both zinc dust but they found out that using zinc nail and copper wire will make the
potato battery work.

With connection to the current issues of our country it is relevant to have such a study that
would to determine which fruit can produce enough electricity as an alternative source of power to
the rotational brownout in Mindanao and shutdown of the different power plants in the Philippines.
