Compost Pit: Project

The document describes how to create a compost pit. It begins by defining compost as decomposed organic matter used as fertilizer. It then lists materials that can be used like banana peels, overripe bananas, and dalandan peels. The process of making a compost pit involves digging a hole 1 foot deep, chopping materials finely, and adding them to the pit in layers no more than 4 inches tall. Initial observations after the first two days found no changes had occurred yet in the composting process.

What is a Compost?

It is an organic matter that has been decomposed and recycled as

a fertilizer and soil amendment. Compost is a key ingredient in organic farming. It
is also the process of composting requires making a heap of wet organic matter
known as green waste (leaves, food waste) and waiting for the materials to break
down into humus after a period of weeks or months. Compost is rich in nutrients.
It is used in gardens, landscaping, horticulture, and agriculture. The compost
itself is beneficial for the land in many ways, including as a soil conditioner, a
fertilizer, addition of vital humus or humic acids, and as a natural pesticide for
soil.
Materials used in Composting

 Banana Peel

 Overripe Banana

 Dalandan Peel
How to make a Compost Pit?

1. Dig the hole for your compost

pit. Your compost hole should be
about 1 ft (30.5 cm) deep. The area
of the hole will be determined by the
amount of organic matter you want
to add. At most, the compost
material should reach a depth of 4
in (10 cm) in the pit.
2. Chop your compost materials
finely. Underground composting
happens at a much slower rate than
aboveground setups. Exposing as
much surface area of the compost materials as possible is the key to speeding
the process.
3. Add the organic materials to the compost
pit. It’s time to start composting! Dump
your food scraps and yard waste into the
hole, but remember – you don’t want the
materials you'll be composting any taller
than about 4 in (10 cm).
