Advantages and Disadvantages of AM and FM

The document discusses the advantages and disadvantages of amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM) radio. Some advantages of AM include its greater range of up to 500 km and simpler and cheaper implementation compared to FM, while advantages of FM are better voice and music quality with less noise. However, AM has disadvantages like poorer quality and greater noise susceptibility compared to FM, while FM has disadvantages like smaller range, greater complexity and cost, and requirement of more bandwidth.

Advantages of AM
 The Range of AM is greater than FM. Its range is 500 km but the range of FM is 30 km.
 AM is simple and cheaper as compare to FM.
 AM has short bandwidth.
 Coverage Area of AM is Receiver is wider than FM because atmospheric propagation.
 AM Receivers are simple, detection is easy.
 AM has use in Radio broadcasting and picture transmission in TV system.
 Am has simple to implement.
 It can be demodulated using a circuit consisting of very few components.

Advantages of FM
 Voice quality is better as compare to AM.
 Quality of Music is better as compare to AM because the bandwidth of the FM is
about 200 khz and the maximum audio frequency broadcast is 15 khz.
 Noise is less as compare to AM.
 Using FM , it is possible to transmit to same quality of information using a lower
power transmitter . therefore FM is a much more efficient process than AM.
 FM is that you can run the PA in compression and saturation mode. With Am you
care about the linearity.
 In FM does not require the linear amplifiers in the transmitter.
 FM does not rely on weather conditions .
 FM radio waves allow for the source to emit two channels of information
simultaneously , allowing for left and right audio channels, perfect for stereo quality.
 Well defined service areas for given transmitter power.
Disadvantages of AM
 Voice Quality is not better as compare to FM.
 Noise are more in AM as compare to FM.
 Weather conditions are affected by in AM.
 Signal of Am is not Stronger like FM.
 Only one sideband of AM transmits of information signal, so it loss power on
other sideband and carrier.
 AM is not suitable for stereo sound.
 Power wastage in DSB-FC transmission.
 It cannot be used for transmitting Music and Sports talks.
Disadvantages of FM
 FM has very small Range.
 FM is very expensive and complex.
 FM has require very large bandwidth.
 FM has very less coverage.
 FM has require more demodulator.
 FM has more complicated Receiver and transmitter.
