Portrait Preliminary Study, Four Styles of Portrait Photography

DIRECTIONS:
• Look through 100’s of portrait examples, find 20 best examples from internet. Think
about the characteristics of each of category….
• Choose different portrait images than what you’ve seen in class.
• Copy, paste and resize five images you think best represent each of the four styles of portraiture.
• Email your completed assignment page to [email protected] and print (4200)
this assignment on ONE PAGE by adjusting your image sizes.

1. Formal Portraiture (five images): a planned picture of someone with a plain background
INCLUDE THESE: sitting, head shot, full-body, lighting, your choice, group of 3 or more people, interesting angles

2. Candid Portraiture (five images): someone doing something (subject does not need to look at camera)
INCLUDE THESE: family gatherings, holidays, parties, people doing what they do

3. Environmental Portraiture (five images): image that shows the personality of the subject,
main focus is on surroundings INCLUDE THESE: sports, work, home, hobbies
4. Self-Portraiture (five images): a reflection or image of yourself (five images).
INCLUDE THESE: being more creative than using a mirror in a bathroom shot. Try to include your camera in the composition.

A portrait is a photo of a person that is taken from the head to shoulder of that certain
person.
