Chapter 3-4
Chapter 3-4
A.
B.
H (t) = a(x − k )(x − 6)(x − 7) 3 = a(8 − k )(8 − 6)(8 − 7)
5 = a(4 − k )(4 − 6)(4 − 7) 3 = [2(8 − k )5] ÷ [6(4 − k )]
5 = 6a(4 − k ) 18(4 − k ) = 80 − 10k)
5 ÷ [6(4 − k )] = a − 8k = 8
k = −1
5 ÷ [6(4 − {− 1})] = a
1/6 = a ∴ H (t) = (1/6)(x + 1)(x − 6)(x − 7)
C.
0-2s increasing in height, rate of increase slowing down
2-6s decreasing in height
, rate of decrease speeding up
6s submerges
7s reemerges
7-8s increasing in height
D.
Underwater for 1 second.
E.
H (t) = (x2 − 5x − 6)(x − 7)
H (t) = x3 − 12x2 + 29x + 42 (1/6)(x3 − 12x2 + 29x + 42) > 6
XE(-∞,3.683) and XE(8.509,∞)
F.
H ′(t) = (1/6)(3x2 − 24x + 29)
H ′(6) = − 7/6
G.
No Because it is near a local min which means the first derivative is close to 0 and can
not be the greatest.

Jonathan throws a ball that starts on the ground and stops when it hits the floor at 4
seconds.

Find IRC at 5 : -x4+2x2-5x+1
I RC = lim [f (x + h) − f (x)] ÷ h
h→0
I RC = lim [− (x + h)4 + 2(x + h)2 − 5(x + h) + 1 + x4 − 2x2 + 5x − 1] ÷ h
h→0
I RC = lim [(x − x − h)(x + x + h)(x2 + (x + h)2 + 2(x + h − x)(x + h + x) + 5(x − x + h)] ÷ h
h→0
Factor out negative h
I RC = lim − h [(2x + h)(x2 + (x + h)2 + 2(2x + h) + 5] ÷ h
h→0
h in numerator and denominator cancel out, limit takes effect and makes h into 0
leaving only non h values into the equation
I RC = lim − [(2x)(2x2 ) + 2(2x) + 5]
h→0
I RC = 4x3 + 4x − 5
Plug in 5 to find IRC at 5
I RC(5) = 4(5)3 + 4(5) − 5
I RC(5) = − 500 + 20 − 5
I RC(5) = − 485

Creative Question:
Fully factor x4 - 17x2 + 16 by completing the square.
Solution:
= x4 -17x2 + 16
= x4 -17x2 + 25x2 - 25x2 + 16
= x4 + 8x2 + 16 - 25x2
=(x2+4)2 - (5x)2
=(x2 - 5x +4)(x2 + 5x +4)
=(x-4)(x-1)(x+4)(x+1)
Challenging Question:
Prove that x + a is a factor of (x+a)5 + (x+c)5 + (a-c)5
Soln:
f(-a) = 0
0 =(-a+a)5 + (-a+c)5 + (a-c)5
Sebastian reflected the function f(x) = x3 in the x-axis, vertically compressed it by a
factor of 13 , horizontally translated it 15 units to the right, and vertically translated it 15
units up. Three points on the resulting curve are (12, -9), (15, 15), and (18, -19).
Determine the original coordinates on the graph.
(x, y) → ( 3x + 15, -y + 15) 12 = 3x + 15; x = -1 -9 = -y + 15; y = 24
(-1, 24) → (12, -9) 15 = 3x + 15; x = 0 15 = -y + 15; y = 0
(0, 0) → (15, 15) 18 = 3x + 15; x = 1 -19 = -y + 15; y = 34
(1, 34) → (18, -19)

Chapter 3 (pg 170 # 17)
The volume of a cylindrical can is (4𝜋x3 + 28𝜋x2 + 65𝜋x + 50𝜋) cm3. The can is (x + 2)
cm high. What is the radius?
V = 𝜋r2h x + 2 √4x3 + 28x 2 + 65x + 50 r = √4x 2 + 20x + 25
R = √ V
πh = 4x2 + 20x + 25 r = √(2x + 5) 2
= 2x + 5
Therefore, the radius of the cylinder is 2x + 5.

Creative Problem:
Sal wants to buy a gym membership. The gym membership is $35.50 a month, and $3 for every
visit. Without the membership is $7.50 each visit.
a) Graph the two options, where f(x) is with the membership and g(x) is without the membership.
b) Looking at the graph, how many days does Sal have to go to the gym to make the
membership worthwhile?
Therefore, Sal has to go to the gym for more than 7 days to make the membership worthwhile
35.50 + 3x < 7.50x Therefore, if Sal goes to the gym for more than 7 days, the gym
35.50 < 4.5x membership is worthwhile, as it is cheaper than going without
7.89 < x a membership

Determine the average rate of change in f(x) from x = 2 to 2 = 7, and estimate the instantaneous rate
