The document is a rubric and action plan for the Judy Serritella Exemplary/Exceptional Library Media Program of the Year Award. It evaluates media center programs in six areas: vision, partnerships, reading role, teaching, environment, and leadership. The action plan identifies areas for the media specialist to improve in vision/goals, collaborations, and teaching/resources. It recommends creating a mission statement, collaborating more with teachers, attending trainings, offering diverse resources, and establishing an online collection for 24/7 access to improve the media center rating.

Rubric

I have recently completed a rubric for the Judy Serritella Exemplary/Exceptional Library Media
Program of the Year Award. Each year the Georgia Library Media Association and the Georgia
Library Association use this rubric to recognize six schools with exemplary or exceptional
performance in the media center. This award identifies school media programs which encourage
and engage students in the areas of critical thinking, reading, research, and ethical use of
information. The judging criteria is divided into six sections: vision, building collaborative
partnerships, the role of reading, teaching for learning, building the learning environment, and
empowering learning through leadership. I have identified three of the six sections as basic and
one as proficient. I have included an action plan with the steps necessary to improve the media
center and the overall rating.

Action Plan

Vision:
The media specialist will meet with the literacy committee as well as administrators to create a
mission statement for the media center. The literacy committee will use the mission statement to
create short term and long term goals and objectives for the media center. The mission statement
will focus on reading as a foundation for student learning, growth, and enjoyment. The literacy
committee will also create a plan to acquire non-print materials for the media center and will
focus on having these materials accessible to students at all times.

Building Collaborative Partnerships:

The media specialist will attend grade level meetings a minimum of once per month and will
collaborate with teachers. As a result of these meetings the media specialist will begin to plan
and implement lessons in the library that incorporate research, technology, and grade appropriate
content. The media specialist will aim to teach a minimum of one lesson per day in the media
center with classroom teachers cooperation.
The media specialist will seek to further her knowledge by participating in professional learning
outside of the school. She will attend at least one media conference per year, one online webinar
per month, and will interact with other media specialist on social media weekly.

Teaching for Learning:

The media specialist will offer multiple formats of information in the media center such as
magazines, online subscriptions, e-books, etc. The media specialist will use these new resources
to plan engaging lessons for students that involve critical thinking. These lessons will be created
in collaboration with classroom teachers as referenced under Building Collaborative
Partnerships. The media specialist will use formative assessments to guide instruction. She will
also use assessment to determine the usefulness and value of each lesson and new program that
she implements.

Building the Learning Environment:

The media center is well equipped and well staffed. There are computer labs available for
classes to use and the media center’s physical collection is robust and diverse. However, the
media center does not offer a virtual collection. In order for students to have 24/7 access to
necessary resources the media specialist will create and maintain a webpage on the school’s
website that offers a virtual collection. The media specialist will also create a social media
account and will begin promoting the virtual collection to make all parents and students aware of
this new resource and to encourage use.
