Learning to add numbers requires a good deal of repetition – playing games is a good way to make
this repetition fun and motivating!
This game will be very effective for small groups of students to play after they have been introduced to
dot patterns, numbers, counting, numerals and simple addition/subtraction with numbers up to ten
Before students play the games, introduce the game pieces to the students and look at them together.
Help them to become familiar with the format and rules of the game.
Try to make learning experiences and game playing as fun as possible. The aim of the game is not to
demand or test the students’ knowledge, but rather to encourage and assist them in playing the game.
Use the game cards in the ways outlined on our instruction sheet, but also adapt and use them creatively.
It is essential that children learn to instantly recognize dot pattern arrangements (it is called subitizing), in
order to move to more challenging mathematical concepts like addition and subtraction. The aim is for
children to be able to retain a mental image of the dot patterns to assist in computation.
Tell your students that the snowman is having fun playing with the snowballs, but he is not sure how many
he has – let’s count them together! Have your students count with 1:1 correspondence by pointing to each
snowball.
Now tell your students that they are going to help the snowman
play with some real snowballs (cotton balls), but he can only have
a few at a time, and we must find which numbers will go together
to make the ten total that he needs.
Purpose
How to play:
Students sit in pairs. Each student has a game board and a pile of cotton balls or
chips/counters.
Students take it in turn to role the die and add the corresponding number of snowballs to
his/her game board (place them over each snowball picture).
The aim is to cover all the snowballs with cotton balls to make exactly ten. Students will
experience adding numbers to make ten.
If a number is rolled that will take the total over ten, the player must miss their turn and
try again on their next roll.
Students remember their numbers or write them as they go on their worksheet, to record
combinations that make ten.
Variation: play in reverse to teach subtraction! Start with 10 and take them away as you
roll.
