INTRODUCTION
There are many different systems of clothing measurement around the world. In clothing,
dress size refers to a set of standard dimensions for dresses and other women's garments such
as tops, skirts, and trousers. Derth
These standard sizes describe combinations of body measurements that are commonly seen in
the general population.
However, because of the drape and ease of the fabric, relatively few measurements are
needed to obtain a well-fitting dress in most styles.
The importance of body measurements as the basis for sizing clothing was appreciated during
World War II. It resulted in publication of data on the body measurements of thousands of
military personnel and the development of sizing of wearing apparel and personal equipment
for the armed forces.
On this basis the apparel industry in UK and US came up with sizing standards that were
been followed by the masses. Following are the details of the international sizing standards.
Indian Apparel Industry
In India, there are no sizing standards that have been specifically set for the Indian
population. Most of the garment manufacturing companies in the apparel sector follow the
UK standards. However some of the companies do have some standard sizes for the garments
that majorly used by the Indian population.
