WELCOME TO CONGRESS
On behalf of the whole family of God here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, I want
to welcome you to our 2018 Religious Education Congress!
This year’s Congress has the theme of “Rise Up!” / “¡Levántate!” / “Hãy Đứng Lên!”
And this year, we want to reflect on our faith in the Resurrection. We stand this year
with the figure of Saint Martha, the sister of Mary and Lazarus.
We recall her pain and sorrow at the death of her brother. We all know the story; we
hear it year after year in the liturgy. Jesus comes to their home after Lazarus had died
and he declares: “I am the resurrection and the life.” And then he asks Martha: “Do
you believe this?”
In this beautiful confession of faith in the resurrection, Saint Martha shows us the
purpose of our own discipleship. We are called to bring our brothers and sisters to the
knowledge that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, who died and is alive for evermore.
We are called to bring them to know the Love that is stronger than death.
I pray that these will be days of grace for you in which you are able to draw closer
to our Risen Lord and that you will be renewed in your commitment to proclaim the
Good News of his Resurrection.
I welcome you and entrust each of you to the maternal protection of our Blessed Mother
Mary, Queen of Angels!
General Info
Dear friends in the Lord,
In the days of January, I was one more time at the Anaheim Convention Center for the National
Association of Music Merchants. As I was listening to all of the music and seeing many of those
involved in music ministry from around the world, and so many involved in the production of
music, I was thinking of all of our gatherings here at the Convention Center, especially as I begin
my sixth year as the Diocesan Bishop. I look forward to welcoming you, along with our two new
auxiliary Bishops, Bishop Timothy Freyer and Bishop Thomas Thanh Nguyen, back to Anaheim
and Orange County.
So, welcome once again to the Diocese of Orange as we join once again with the Archdiocese
of Los Angeles and our many visitors and pilgrims, and so many in ministry who come to join with
us these days of the Congress. It is truly an expression of the Universal Church! I also hope that
you have the chance to visit, while you are here, the Christ Cathedral campus. We are making great
progress on the renovation of the Cathedral building itself, and now have a “hold the date” for
its dedication: July 17, 2019. On our Christ Cathedral campus, we already have an average Mass
attendance each Sunday of 12,000 with Mass in four languages: Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin),
English and Vietnamese. We have a wonderful staff of docents, headed by Mrs. Trudy Mazzarella,
ready to welcome you. I look forward to seeing you there, even as I know that I will see some of
you at the Diocese of Orange, and Orange Catholic Foundation booth in the Convention Center.
I hope and pray this time together will help us to rise and go forth once again as “Missionary Disciples”!
And, not only ourselves, but those whom we encounter (in the “Providence of God”) on the way!
As I just mentioned and wish to reiterate, I hope to be around most of the weekend and personally
greet as many of you as possible. Please stop by and visit the booth in the exhibit hall for the Diocese
of Orange. See you there!
Let us praise the Lord for this weekend and pray for each other constantly.

Necesitamos confiar
en su providencia y en su amor. Debemos ayudar a nuestros hermanos y hermanas
+ Jose H. Gomez

ST. PATRICK: THE IMMIGRANT SAINT
Saturday, March 17, 2018 • 5:15 pm
Rev. David Loftus, presider
Although many legends abound concerning St. Patrick, a study of his life reveals a true
S journey of “rising up” to overcome many challenges and return with a heart on fire for
A Christ. St. Patrick was a victim of human trafficking and slavery of his time and was an
T immigrant to his beloved Ireland, where he spent his life evangelizing and catechizing the
people there. This Mass recognizes that there are many people today who are suffering in
U
modern-day slavery and human trafficking and we must seek their freedom; that those
R who migrate to our shores can bring blessings with them.
