Learning outcomes:
After completing this lesson, the students should be able to do the following:
1. Define classroom management and explain its implications to successful instruction;
2. Compare the conventional and modern concepts of classroom management
3. Discuss the domains of classroom management and their applications in the conduct of the classroom
routine activities;
4. Present the elements of the effective classroom management and its impact on the teaching and learning
process.
5. Discuss the guiding principles on classroom management ad relate it to real classroom situations.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
It is the process of organizing and conducting a classroom to maximize learning. It involves the teacher’s
action to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning,
and self-motivation (Burden and Byrd, 2003).
Traditionally, classroom management has been viewed as reactive in nature with a focus on how
teachers react after students’ misbehaviour. However, this is approach does not hold true anymore. Teachers
who are obsessed with disciplining students who neglect instructional preparation in favour of total control tend to
end up with more control problems than teachers who are well prepared and who focus their efforts on helping
students achieve academically.
Suffice to say, a comprehensive management plan should include both proactive (preventive) and
reactive (disciplinary) management strategies. Therefore, Classroom Management can be defined as provisions
and procedures necessary to create and maintain an environment in which teaching and learning occur (Duke,
1987).

PERSPECTIVE ON CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT


1. Classroom management is possibly the most important challenge facing teachers.
2. Classroom management and instruction are highly interrelated.
