LUBRIZOL TEST PROCEDURE

TP-ACM-4
Edition: September 14, 2010
Original Date: April 7, 2008

Test Method for the Determination of

Chlorides by Potentiometric Titration
Purpose: Procedure:
This procedure is used to determine the chloride 1. Weigh a 4 - 5 gram sample (1 - 2 grams if the
salts in Lubrizol Surfactants, using a potentio- Chloride content is greater than 5) to the
metric titrator. nearest 0.1 mg into a 250 ml beaker.
2. Add 110 mls of deionized water.
3. Using a stir bar and stirrer, titrate with 0.1N
Abstract:
AgNO 3 to the potentiometric end point.
A solution of the surfactant is titrated
potentiometrically with silver nitrate to determine
the weight percentage of chloride salt. Review Calculations:
MSDS for each material before handling.
% Sodium Chloride= N x ml x 58.5

be worn during transfer of materials so that
injury due to spillage is avoided. % Diethanolamine Hydrochloride = N x ml x 142.6
