Hyen
na and thee goatts

Hyena was not only angry, he was in a rage, in fact he was fuming: you see, once again the little cunning
Jackal had managed to pull a fast one on him. The incident with the self-cooking pot was mightily
embarrassing. And the madam, the madam had not been pleased with the present from Novosibirsk to say
the least. As the hot sun gloriously watched over lush vegetation and suntanned the backs of thousands of
grazing animals, Hyena clenched his paws and once again vowed to take his revenge on the crafty Jackal.
“He will surely pay for the self-cooking pot trick!” He roared loudly and proudly as he walked on.
Along the way, Hyena encountered other animals and asked them if they had per chance seen Jackal.
“Look for him at man’s kraal,” Elephant trumpeted magnificently, remembering a date.
“He is with the goats there.” Lion roared, targeting a young foolish zebra.

And so Hyena headed into the said direction and walked and walked until he arrived there. And just as
Elephant had said, Hyena found Jackal sitting outside Man’s kraal licking his chops: eating.
And so, as quietly as he could, Hyena tiptoed ever so slowly then pounced on the distracted Jackal and
promptly locked his large paws around Jackal’s scrawny lying neck.
“Please spare my life Hyena my friend” Jackal began, pleading for dear life as was usual. “If you do, I will
share these tasty goats with you.”
Angry Hyena, with vengeance burning in his eyes was just about to teach Jackal a lesson when the
thought of tasty goat meat interrupted his muscles. His stomach rumbled at the idea too. Reluctantly, as
was usual, Hyena relaxed his strong hold but still fumed away.
“You better tell me how to get at the goats in the kraal or else you are dead!”
He roared angrily, showing his sharp magnificent teeth.
“Indeed my friend,” Jackal began, trembling visibly. “Look here, I’ve dug a hole to get into the kraal. Just
give me some time to dig a hole for you, so that you too will soon be eating tasty meat.”
Hyena smiled happily at this and looked around. He was just a little bit nervous, for you see in the
distance, Man’s house was clearly visible. But since it was late in the afternoon, Man the laziest animal
ever, was bound to be fast asleep or doing idiotic things like surfing the internet.

It was not long before Hyena’s own hole was completed and he was finally able to get inside the kraal. He
immediately started devouring tasty goat after tasty goat: his thirst for revenge long forgotten. In fact, the
warm sun was shining just right and the meat was just tender that such thoughts quietly evaporated. Now
it so happened that every time after eating a goat, Jackal would go through the hole and go outside the
kraal. After he did this a number of times, Hyena finally noticed and asked with a big hunk of goat in his
mouth:
“Hey Jackal, why do you go out of the kraal so often, aren’t you afraid of spoiling your appetite?”
The crafty Jackal ate one more goat before answering nonchalantly:
“My friend Hyena, I have this embarrassing problem with my bladder you see. After every few bites, I
need to pee every so often.”
Satisfied with this answer, Hyena turned his back on the other and started on another goat.

But the truth of the matter was that Jackal went through the hole to ensure that with all the meat the two
were consuming, he would still be able to fit through when the time came. And when he did not fit, he
would dig some more around the hole in order to make it just wide enough. But he did this so carefully
and slyly that the other was none the wiser.
Sometime later, when Hyena was so full he could hardly move - he lay on his back and smiled happily,
thankful at having found Jackal. Alas, he was now so full that if he tried to get out of the kraal, he would
not have been able to. And that, in fact was Jackal’s plan all along. No sooner, Jackal went through his
own hole which was still wide enough and started screaming.
“Man! Man! Come see - Hyena is in your kraal eating your goats!” He shouted loudly.
The surprised Hyena heaved himself off the floor and looked around only to see Jackal standing outside
the kraal yelling at the top of his voice. His eyes looked to the direction of Man’s house and clearly saw
him come out with a long leather whip in one hand and an angry look on his face.
Poor old Hyena as full as he was, immediately made a dash for his own hole and soon realized that it was
much too small for him to get through. The cunning Jackal, the vile fiend, the trickster had done it again:
he had made sure that his own hole was always wide enough to get through. Hyena started digging but it
was all pointless, he needed more time. Man was now running towards the kraal, his intentions certain as
well as his anger.

That day was a very terrible day for poor Hyena: in fact the whipping action he received inside the kraal
was far, far worse than any he had ever received. When he at last did manage to escape, Hyena was in so
much pain you cannot even imagine. And as usual, Hyena vowed to catch the sneaky Jackal and teach
him a lesson he would never ever be able to forget as long as he lived.
But that of course, is yet another story…
