Pre Bs a bali LEAD ESTABLISHING & MAINTAINING A MODEL STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM Welcome to Leadership Survival Guide, A Guide to Establishing and Maintaining a Model Student Leadership Program. During today’s workshop, you will be provided with the tools and techniques required to develop and expand your own student leadership program. It is my sincere hope that you will leave this session with a greater appreciation for how a strong student leadership team can be of benefit to your entire program. This “tip-sheet” is provided to help you remember the key ideas of the workshop. Often, at events such as this, “aha moments” are lost in the sea of information gathered, hallway. conversations, and vendor materials collected. | am hoping that having the key points of the workshop will allow you to sit back and think big about what you want to accomplish with your leadership training program. If, after today's workshop, there is a question that has been left unanswered ‘or something more you would like to know, please come up and ask me. | always enjoy hearing about what different people are doing and would love to be a Sounding board for your thoughts and ideas. If time is tight, you can also visit me online at www.scottlang.net where you can view my curricula, sign up for my monthly missives, or inquire about scheduling a workshop experience for your own group. At any rate, thanks for coming, and ENJOY!SOME THOUGHTS BEFORE WE BEGIN... © 1BELIEVE MOST OF YOU ARE PROBABLY ALREADY TEACHING LEADERSHIP © | BELIEVE THAT A STRONG STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM WILL ENHANCE YOUR MUSICAL PERFORMANCE * BELIEVE TEACHING MUSIC IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY, TEACHING LEADERSHIP IS OUR PRIVILEGE ‘There is no one way to teach leadership. Your individual skill sets as a teacher, combined with the ever-changing needs of your program, create an infinite set of possibilities. While some student leaders will serve as surrogate teachers, others are merely task managers. Each one of these roles is critical and important, but requires very different training. WHY WE TEACH LEADERSHIP ¢ IT ENHANGES THE QUALITY OF THE STUDENTS’ EXPERIENCE IT WILL MAKE YOU A MORE EFFECTIVE EDUCATOR ¢ IT WILL INCREASE THE QUALITY OF YOUR PRODUCT IT WILL MAKE YOUR JOB MORE REWARDING AND ENJOYABLE ° IT WILL CREATE MORE “BUY IN” FOR WHAT YOU ARE TRYING T0 ACCOMPLISH LEADERSHIP | believe that the single most important part of your leadership training program is the Selection process. Time and energy spent attracting the right type of student leader and finding them the right “fit” do more to create a successful leadership team than any training you do after the fact. Having said that: © WHAT IS YOUR SELECTION PROCESS AND WHY DO YOU USE IT? ‘© HOW DOES THE APPLICATION REFLECT YOUR PROGRAMMATIC NEEDS? © HOW DOES THE STUDENT BENEFIT EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT CHOSEN? + HOW DOES THE PROGRAM BENEFIT, REGARDLESS OF WHO IS CHOSEN? * WHAT ARE YOUR CRITERIA FOR SELECTION? SOME RECOMMENDATIONS BEFORE STARTING THE SELECTION PROCESS * MAKE SURE THE STUDENTS HAVE A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROCESS. | RECOMMEND MEETING WITH ‘ALL CANDIDATES PRIOR TO THE START OF THE PROCESS AND CLEARLY SPELLING OUT NOT ONLY THE SELECTION «PROCESS, BUT YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THOSE WHO ARE SELECTED. '* DESIGN A SELECTION PROCESS THAT REFLECTS YOUR BELIEFS, AND CHOOSE ONLY STUDENTS WHO ARE WILLING TO SUPPORT THOSE BELIEFS. © WHEN CREATING YOUR LEADERSHIP TEAM, BE FLEXIBLE, AND FOCUS ON LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE. ® DECIDE THE TYPE OF PERSON YOU WANT TO TRAVEL WITH AFTER YOU HAVE CHOSEN YOUR LEADERS, NOW WHAT? DESIGNING A TRAINING PROCESS IS A LOT LIKE PLANNING A TRIP. YOU HAVE TO ASK: ¢ WHERE AM I CURRENTLY? ¢ HOW QUICKLY DO WE NEED TO GET THERE? ¢ WHERE DOI WANT TO BE? ¢ WHAT RESOURCES DO WE HAVE AVAILABLE? HERE IS WHAT | RECOMMEND YOU TEACH YOUR STUDENTS: °PURPOSE PICTURE = ° PARAMETERS © PERFORMANCE —¢ PRESENCE * PROCESS © PERMISSION WHAT SHOULD THEY BE DOING? + EDUCATING, ENGAGING AND ENFORCING THE STANDARDS AND CULTURE OF THE PROGRAM WHAT SHOULD THEY NOT BE DOING? © STUDENT LEADERS SHOULD NOT VIOLATE DISTRICT POLICY OR SCHOOL POLICY © STUDENT LEADERS SHOULD NOT DO ANYTHING THAT DENIGRATES ANOTHER HUMAN BEING ¢ STUDENT LEADERS SHOULD NOT STAND BY AND DO NOTHING THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THAT YOU USE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE A CULTURE INSTEAD OF A CLASS THANKS FOR COMING, AND REMEMBER... There are no simple solutions, Just like anything else, teaching leadership requires a commitment of time, effort and resources. | recommend teaching leadership the same way you teach intonation, a daily assault of information and attention. Remember, you are not alone. There are people and resources to help you. Utilize them. Most of all, enjoy the ride on the “leadership express" as it adds a whole new dimension to your teaching, your program and your life!NER RT MATS at by SIMU ee h ce ce Piet eee Ra iaelec elder cath improve student performance in the classroom, on the stage, and beyond.
