Science in daily life: In the daily life of a man science is visible. For instance, he
can now travel much faster and more comfortably than in the past. Bullock carts in
villages and horse carriages in town are being replaced by tractors, trucks auto-
carriages in and cars.
Similarly, quick means of communication have brought the peoples of the world
together. We can talk to any person through telephone and mobiles. Electronic
mail (email) has made the transmission of any message across internet to any
person in this world.
Further, it has made the use of radio both as a means of information and recreation.
In times of distress, wireless telegraphy renders extraordinary service. A plane or
ship in danger can at once contact on wireless the nearest aerodrome or port and
get timely help.
Cinematography is also a unique gift of science. The talkies have definitely taken
the place of the theatre and a large scale cinema industry has sprung up.
The trade and commerce have got a new life by the establishment of huge
industrial plants. One may feel surprised if one sees how modern factories and
mills run and how their products are exported to every corner of the world.
1. The printing press in 1430s
Dyson, the inventor described its invention as the turning point at which “knowledge began
freely replicating” and more wanted.
And then there was light for the rest of modern life.
3. Penicillin, 1928
Accidentally discovered in 1928, though antibiotics were not widely distributed until after World
War II, when they became the silver bullet for any number of formerly deadly diseases
Turned air and fuel into power, eventually replacing the steam engine.
Refracting light through glass is one of those simple ideas that took a mysteriously long time to
catch on. The Romans had a glass industry, and they studied the optical effects of a glass bowl of
water, but this was centuries before the invention of eyeglasses.
“The idea of stamping images is natural if you have paper, but until then, it’s economically
unaffordable.” — Charles C. Mann
8. Vaccination, 1796
The British doctor Edward Jenner used the cowpox virus to protect against smallpox in 1796, but
it wasn’t until Louis Pasteur developed a rabies vaccine in 1885 that medicine—and
government—began to accept the idea that making someone sick could prevent further sickness.
A major reason we live 40 years longer than we did in 1880 (see “Die Another Day”)
Powered the factories, trains, and ships that drove up to the Industrial Revolution.
15. The airplane, 1903
Transformed travel, warfare, and our view of the world (see No. 40)
Like the lever (No. 48) and the abacus (No. 43), it augmented human capabilities.
“Discovering how to make cold would change the way we eat—and live—almost as profoundly
as discovering how to cook.” — George Dyson
Helped us to kill.
Mass-produced steel, made possible by a method known as the Bessemer process, became the
basis of modern industry.
It quantified time.
Made knowledge accessible and have contributed to the rise of societies that used phonetic
letters over those that used ideographic ones.
The first demonstration of electronic mass media’s power to spread ideas and homogenize
culture.
A less heralded cousin of steam engines (No. 10), turbines are the backbone of today’s energy
infrastructure: they generate 80 percent of the world’s power.
Fueled the modern economy, established its geopolitics, and changed the climate.
One of the first practical applications of Louis Pasteur’s germ theory, this method for using heat
to sterilize wine, beer, and milk is widely considered to be very important .
Transformed travel, warfare, and our view of the world (see No. 15)
The Egyptians had not yet discovered the wheel when they built their pyramids; they are thought
to have relied heavily on levers.
Contribution to our health and wellness: The invention of medicines for severe
diseases is a significant contribution of Science in the field of health and wellness.
Plague, small-pox, cholera, leprosy, typhoid and even tuberculosis are no long
terrible disease now.
Human body has been thoroughly studied and most of the diseases are controlled
by life-giving medicines and miraculous surgery. Plastic surgery can make an ugly
woman a beautiful lady.
