Lesson Plan

The lesson teaches 3rd grade students about multiplication by having them group dried noodles into sets of 7 to represent the multiplication problem 5 x 7, the teacher then models grouping on a smartboard and has students practice drawing grouping diagrams on whiteboards to represent multiplication problems before assessing understanding with a google form.

Ed Tech Lesson Plan

Teacher: Gabbi Barrus and Malory Hart

Subject Area: Mathematics
Grade Level: Third Grade

Common Core Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.1

Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number
of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in
which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.

Anticipatory Set: Pair students up and give students exactly 35 dried noodles. Tell the
students to make groups with seven noodles in each group
● How can grouping help find a total number of objects?
● How can these groups of noodles be used for multiplication?

Objective/Purpose: By the end of this lesson students will be able to demonstrate how
grouping whole numbers represents multiplication.
● I can place a certain amount of objects into groups
● I can show how whole number can be grouped to find a product

Input:
1. Grouping: grouping a whole number into smaller numbers to add easier
2. Repeated Addition: adding the same number over and over again
3. “Groups Of”: Multiply

Model: Using a smartboard we would teach this lesson by showing students the
comparison between multiplying and grouping numbers. Multiplying number requires
more high level math fact, and grouping is a simple way to repeatedly add numbers to
find a product. We will also use a google slide to show definitions and examples of how
these two methods are the same.

Guided Practice: Give students a white board to practice a couple problems of

multiplication using grouping. For each problem students will need to draw their circles
and dots for each problem.
Example- 5x7 has 5 circles with 7 dots in each circle
1. 5x4
2. 5x8
3. 3x6
4. 2x8
5. 8x2
Check for Understanding: We will make a google form that is multiple choice to check
the students understanding of multiplication using the grouping model to find whole
numbers. Upon completion of their google form, students must also turn in a scratch
paper with their work for each problem. This will be used to ensure that students tried
and did not just guess.

Closure: Give each student a bag of 40 noodles. The student must demonstrate how
many noodles will go into 5 groups. Have student write a multiplication problem that
supports their grouping.

Independent Practice:
ixl is a sufficient website to help students determine the amount of objects that are in
each group.

Worksheets can help students practice how to draw the groups and objects in each
group. Students will also learn how to problem solve because they may draw the
groupings backwards and with teacher guidance have to fix their mistakes.
