MODULE TITLE: GROWING SEEDLINGS
NOMINAL DURATION: 72 HOURS

INTRODUCTION :

This module covers the knowledge, skills and the proper attitude required in procuring,
selecting, and sowing of seeds and identifying, mixing and sterilizing propagating/growing media
and performing cultural management practices.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of this module you MUST be able to:

1. Procure and select good quality seeds


2. Conduct seed testing
3. Identify and mix components and proportion of growing media
4. Sterilize growing media
5. Sow seeds in tray compartments
6. Perform pre-cultural management practices

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:
1. Good seed and superior quality/variety are selected
2. Good quality seeds are identified
3 Procured the selected quality
4. Methods of seed testing are identified
5. Different methods of seed testing are conducted
6.Seeds are tested and calculated
7. Seed germination and treatment procedures are performed
8. Percentage germination of the seed stock according to standard procedure are

9. Characteristics of good propagating media are determined
10. Different propagating media are identified and selected
11. Mixed components and proportion of different media
12. Types of treatment of growing media are identified
13. Different types of treatment of growing media is selected
14. Growing media are sterilized to prevent the attack of borne microorganisms

16. Seed and tray compartment are properly selected based on recommended
Seeding rate per compartment
17. Seeds are sown in tray compartments
18. Seedlings are properly cared and watered
19. Different fertilizers and pesticide are selected appropriate to plants and to control pests
20. Right kind and amount of fertilizer and pesticides are determined and selected
21. Right kind and amount of fertilizer and pesticides are applied
22. Seedlings are hardened prior to planting.
