Lesson Idea Name

This lesson teaches 1st grade students about tally charts and bar graphs through a math activity where students collect and graph data about ice cream flavors. Students will use the Create-A-Graph website to input and visualize their data in a bar graph. The teacher will demonstrate the process, have students practice as a group and individually, and assess their understanding with a handout. Extensions include a group project where students collect and graph their own data set to present to the class.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Describe how you could address
Universal Design for Learning principles to extend and support the learning
experiences for all students.:
This website gives the students the chance to input their data into a website and
get back the graph of their choice. This definitely supports the learning because
they will not have to spend as much time coloring and drawing a graph, but just
inputing the information but practicing the concept.

Lesson idea implementation: As you address the standards, what will students
and teachers do? How will the project be introduced? How long will it take to
complete? How will student learning be assessed? How will the final product be
used to inform/differentiate learning? How will you extend the student learning
to a higher learning level? How will you conclude the lesson? How will you
provide feedback to students about their work? MINIMUM 2 paragraph
overview.:
For this lesson, I would start by taking a poll of everyone's favorite flavor of
ice-cream out of Vanilla, Chocolate, and strawberry. I would then demonstrate
creating a bar graph out of the data they collected. I would reinforce the lesson
by doing another problem and letting the class try and do it as a group. I will be
guiding the conversation and helping when needed. For extra practice, I would
give the students a problem to try on their own similar to the first one we did. I
would give them the chance to input it into the website and see their data on the
screen.
I would probably assess the student’s ability on this lesson by doing a
handout. While knowing how to input the data into the computer is important,
it's also important that they know how to do it by hand. I believe that using this
website would be an awesome activity for this concept that could really enrich
the lesson.

Reflective Practice: After designing this lesson idea, how do you feel the
activities you created could impact student learning? You may have designed
this idea as an introductory activity to a unit of study. With that in mind, what
could be done to further extend the lesson? Are there other technology tools that
could further enhance this project?
I would definitely do a group project to further this lesson. I would have the
students pick a subject to take date on (using their classmates) and graph it
together. I could put their graphs on the smart board and let them explain their
data to the class.
