LESSON: WISH

I- DEFINITIONS
A wish is a sentence to express wishes, wish of someone about a future matter, a present
matter or a past matter.
For example:
I wish I would be a teacher in the future. (‫ہوں استاد ایک میں مستقبل میں کہ ہے خواہش‬.)
II- CÁC LOẠI CÂU ƯỚC
1. Wish in the present
- Wish in the present is used to express desire unreal in the present.
- Structure:
Wish + Past Simple
Wish + Past Continuous
Example (1): I wish I had a car (In fact, I don’t have a car now). (‫دراصل‬، ‫نہیں کار ابھی پاس میرے‬
‫)ہے‬.
Example (2): I wish it weren’t raining now (In fact, it is raining now). (‫میں اصل‬، ‫ہو بارش یہ‬
‫)ہے رہی‬.
- NOTE:
With verb TO BE “were” is used for all. However, "was" can still be used in spoken language.
Example: I wish it wasn’t / weren’t raining now.
2. Wish in the future
- Wish in the future is used to complain or express a wish in the future.
- Structure:
Wish + would / could + V
Wish + were going to + V
Example (1): I wish I could attend the course next month (In fact, I can’t attend). (‫میں اصل‬،
‫)کرسکتا نہیں شرکت میں‬.
Example (2): I wish I weren’t going to visit her next week (In fact, I am going to visit her
next week). (‫گا کروں نہیں دورہ کا اس ہفتے اگلے میں کاش‬. ‫)گا کروں دورہ کا اس میں دراصل‬.
Example 3: I wish you wouldn’t put your clothes everywhere. (‫نہیں پھینک کپڑے اپنے نے تم چاہے‬
‫)دی‬.
- NOTE: Wish in the future usually have formula:
A + wish + B + would / could + V
3. Wish in the past
- Wish in the past are used to express a situation didn't happen in the past.
- Structure:
Wish + Past Perfect
Wish + Past Perfect Continuous
Wish + Perfect Conditional (would / could / might + have + PP)
Example (1): I wish you had come to my birthday party (In fact, you didn’t come). (‫نے تم کاش‬
‫کی شرکت میں پارٹی کی سالگرہ میری‬. ‫)تھا آیا نہیں وہ دراصل‬.
Example (2): I wish I hadn’t been working for her at that time (In fact, I was working for her
at that time) (‫گا کروں نہیں کام لئے کے اس میں وقت اس‬. ‫)ہوں رہا کر کام لئے کے اس میں دراصل‬
Example (3): I wish you could have seen that film. (In fact, you couldn’t see that film). (‫آپ کیا‬
‫ہیں سکتے دیکھ کو فلم اس‬. ‫)دیکھا نہیں نے تم دراصل‬.
4. Wish + to do
- Sometime, we use “wish to” to replace for “want to”.
Example: I wish to pass the exam (‫)ہوں سکتا کر پاس امتحان اس میں کاش‬
5. Wish sb st / wish sb to do st (sb-somebody ; st-something)
- This usage often means a blessing.
Example: I wish you happy birthday (‫)ہو مبارک سالگرہ‬
I wish you to become a good doctor (‫)گے ہوں ڈاکٹر اچھے آپ چاہے‬.
- Notice that when you want to give a wish for other people by using verbs, you must use
"hope" instead of "wish".
Example:
We wish you the best of luck = We hope you have the best of luck.
I wish you a safe and pleasant journey = I hope you have a safe and pleasant journey.
6. If only
- If only (‫قیمت‬، ‫ )قیمت‬may be used instead of the verb "wish" but more shades. ("‫کے فعل "خواہش‬
‫ہے جاسکتا کیا استعمال بجائے‬، ‫)خیال اظہار زیادہ لیکن‬
Example: If only you were here. (‫)ہیں یہاں آپ اگر‬.
HOMEWORK
Exercise 1: Choose correct sentence to complete sentence.
1. I wish I (have/ has/ had) a lot of interesting book.
2. I wish I (would meet/ met/ meet ) her tomorrow.
3. I wish I (was/ were/ am) your sister.
4. I wish they ( won/ had won/ would win) the match last Sunday
5. I wish they ( played/ playing/ play) soccer well.
6. She wishes she (will/ would/ can) come here to visit us.
7. I wish yesterday ( were /was/had been ) a better day.
8. I wish I (can speak/ could speak/ will speak) many languages
9. I wish tomorrow ( were/ will be/ would be) Sunday.
10. I wish I ( am/ was/ were) a movie star.
