A Short Introduction to

ANSYS Workbench

Introduction
This is a short introduction to ANSYS Workbench, the program suite you are going to use when performing
CFD simulations. There are probably two versions of ANSYS available in the computer lab, v14.5 and v15.
The documentation provided in this document should work for both versions.

Things to Consider Before You Begin


• When logging on to the computer, it recommended to use the AD-domain (and not EMBA or anything
else) to avoid problems.

• Make sure you got enough disc space, a simulation case can be in the order of 10-200 MB depending
on mesh size. Simulations can be run on the local hard drive (C:\temp\) and then moved to your
network disk when the lab is finished.

• When you are meshing your geometry, the maximum allowed nodes are limited to 512 000.

How to get started


You will find the program under: Start/All Programs/ansys/ansys v145/Workbench. If you ever get
stuck, you can find the help files under Help/Ansys Workbench Help inside the program. If you go to
Help/tutorials you will be redirected to ANSYS’ web page where you will need a user name and password.
To avoid this, the relevant tutorials are therefore found at the course web page:

There you can download all the necessary files for CAD generation (using the program Design Modeler),
meshing (using the Meshing Application) and CFD setup/solver/post-processing (using CFX). It is a single
.zip file called files.zip and the password for the file is 80VMMT_files. For CFX there are additional
tutorials inside the program, at Help/Tutorials.

Assignment
You are going to learn the basics of CFD, which includes CAD, meshing and pre- and post-processing of the
CFD simulation. For the CAD part you are free to use any program you feel comfortable with, but a short
introduction to the CAD program in Ansys Workbench DesignModeler is given.

There are many more tutorials available for CFX, access them through: Workbench/’Component Sys-
tems’/CFX/Setup, then inside CFX: Help/Tutorials. Do as many, or as few as you like.

The goal of this assignment is to give you an introduction how to setup and run a CFD simulation in
Ansys CFX. You are allowed (and encouraged!) to work in pairs during all laboratory assignments. A
small questionnaire will be available on the course web page, and you will have until the end of the lab on
26/1-2015 to answer a couple of easy questions about the programs. Focus of the questions will be on CFX.
The answers to all the questions are found in the provided documentation OR in the help files (available by
pressing F1 or in the top menu). Hand in the finished questionnaire to the lab assistant or leave it in a post
box named ”TMMV08 reports in” in the C-corridor, entrance 15, A-building. Your corrected questionnaire
is handed out at the same location in the folder marked ”TMMV08 reports out”
