Weather Events Lesson

Lesson Plan: Weather Events

I. Content and Standards:


a. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.7- Participate in shared research and writing
projects (e.g., explore a number of "how-to" books on a given topic and
use them to write a sequence of instructions).

b. S.K-2.A.1.1.1 Identify a scientific fact as something that can be observed


using the five senses.

c. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.2- Write informative/explanatory texts in


which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide
some sense of closure.

II. Prerequisites:

a. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.1.2- Identify the main topic and retell key


details of a text.

b. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.1.3- Describe the connection between two


individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text.

III. Essential Questions (provide a framework)

a. What facts can we learn about the weather?

IV. Instructional Objective:

a. Students will be able to recognize common weather events and facts about
them.

b. Students will be able to read informational texts and identify important


facts about weather.
c. Students will be able apply their understanding of important weather facts
by creating a class book on weather.

V. Instructional Procedures:

a. Entrance- What is 1 thing you know or 1 question you have about


wind/thunder and lightning/rain/snow/sunshine/clouds.

b. Students will be grouped by their tables and assigned one weather event.

i. Each group will be given a book on their weather event to read and
take facts from.

ii. Students will fill out a web on their event.

iii. Each student must choose 1 fact to create their own page on
weather.

iv. As a group, the students will make a cover page for their section of
the book.

c. All sections of the book will be put together to create a class book on
weather events.

d. Exit ticket- Share 1 fact you learned about your weather event? Does that
make you like or not like this event?

VI. Materials and Equipment:

Blank Paper, Writing Paper, crayons, Weather Watcher Books: Wind, Rain,
Thunder and Lightning, Sunshine, Clouds, Snow

VII. Assessment/Evaluation:
a. Group Webs
b. Student book pages

c. Exit ticket

VIII. VII. Differentiation:

a. Higher Level Students

i. Create a table of contents for the book.

ii. Write an introduction about weather for the front of the book.

b. Lower Level Students

i. Will receive check-ups with teacher as gentle reminders to keep on


task, and to assess their understanding of the material and
expectations.

IX. Technology: N/A

X. Self-Assessment: Student engagement throughout the lesson, student


understanding represented through their responses, their webs, and the final
pages for the class book.
