Corrosion Allowance

Corrosion allowance is an extra thickness added to equipment walls to account for expected metal loss over the equipment's lifetime. The corrosion rate used is typically double the actual expected rate for safety. Guidelines provide corrosion allowance values based on the type of material and service conditions. For a reactor example, the wall thickness calculation includes a corrosion allowance term of 0.125 inches to account for the expected metal loss over the reactor's lifetime.

Corrosion Allowance

i) Definition

After determining a wall thickness that meets the parameter, an extra

thickness called corrosion allowance is added to the wall to comensate
for the metal expected to be lost over the life of the equipment.

ii) Rate

The rate is calculated based on the lifetime of a reactor, for example

length per year but for safety considerations, the rate is double.

iii) Guidelines for corrosion allowance

iv) Reactor volume calculation and corrosion allowance

hoop-stress formula for wall thickness:

PR
t  tc
SE  0.6 P
• t= vessel wall thickness, in.
• P= design pressure difference between inside and outside of
vessel, psig
• R= inside radius of steel vessel, in.
• S= maximum allowable stress for the steel.
• E= joint efficiency (≈0.9)
• tc=corrosion allowance = 0.125 in/3.175 mm

𝑡= 𝑚2 + 0.003175 𝑚
𝑁 𝑁
(6.76 × 107 2 × 1.0) − (0.6)(115 × 103 2 )
𝑚 𝑚
= 0.00318 m or 3.18 mm
