John Piper Sermon Notes

God's glory and human contentment are intricately linked. Piper's sermon made two points: 1) We are most satisfied when God is most glorified in and through us, and his glory and our happiness cannot be separated. 2) True contentment comes only through satisfaction in God alone. The goal of missions is not outward obedience but inviting people to obedience from a heart seeking to please God. The sermon called Christians to obedience from a relationship with Christ, not just rule-following.

John Piper Sermon Notes— by Christopher O’Rear

Thesis or Purpose of the Sermon:

God is after His glory and the contentment of people in Him.

Main Text:
Romans 11:36, Colossians 1:16, Romans 1:5, Isaiah 48:9-11

Outline of the Sermon:

1. The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. Though seemingly
two separate goals, they are intricately linked— we are most satisfied when God is
most glorified in and through us, and vice versa.
2. What’s our motive for missions— to see God be glorified, or to see people be
rescued? We cannot choose between God’s glory and man’s happiness.
3. God gives joy to His people because true contentment and peace comes only when
one is satisfied in Him.
4. Faith is sole satisfaction in Jesus.
5. The goal of missions is not to spur people on to rote obedience, but rather, to
invite them to obedience that flows from a heart seeking to please the Lord.

Sermon Reflection: (What did I learn, how did God speak to me?)

Piper’s sermon was an encouraging call to obedience that stems from a personal
relationship with Jesus. It is often easy to think of obedience as “rule following,” but
that is not what Christians are called to. When we realize the grace of God and what
we’ve been saved from, our natural reaction should be to run toward Him and flee
anything that hints of being displeasing to God.
I’ve been guilty of thinking that glorifying God is often detached from emotion. I am
not an emotional person. However, it’s incredible to see passages (such as Romans
15:7-13) where we clearly see that God wants His children to be happy— not because
of material possessions or earthly position, but because they are solely satisfied in
Jesus Christ.
