Power Factor Correction

Power factor correction involves installing capacitors to improve the power factor in electrical systems. A low power factor is caused by inductive loads like motors that require reactive power. Capacitors provide reactive power to counteract the inductive loads and improve the power factor. Benefits of power factor correction include reduced electrical costs, lower distribution losses, increased system capacity, and better voltage regulation. Safety procedures must be followed when working with capacitors due to the risk of electric shock from stored charges.

POWER FACTOR

CORRECTION
MICHAEL L. PASCUA, REE, Rme
REASONS BEHIND P.F CORRECTIONS

• Power Factor is the ratio between Power and Apparent Power

• Motors
FORMULA POWER FACTOR

P.F = watts/va

Or

P.F = P/S

COMMON TYPES OF CAPACITORS
3 PHASE CAPACITOR
REACTORS

• Shunt Reactors

• Series Reactors
BENEFITS OF POWER FACTOR CORRECTION

• Reduce electrical costs.

• Reduce load losses of the distribution system. I²R Loss

• Increase the system's capacity.

• Maintain a better voltage regulation on the system.

• Improves P.F.
SAFETY
• Capacitors hold charges

• High Quality Capacitors

• Capacitors in transit
RULES FOR P.F CALCULATIONS

• Power input in a load is what the

utility see as load

• P= KW or W
RULES
• Power is constant
• KW or Watts

• Output power is what the customer sees

• KW or Watts

• Cal. All Power Values @ original P.F 1st

Sm Pm Qm
• Cal. All Power Values @ New P.F (corrected p.f)
• Using Pm – constant
• Scor and Qcor or Delivered
RULES

• Find the Qreq or the Q of the cap required to correct the P.F
• Qcapacitor = Qm – Qcorrected

• Cal Size of Cap’s Xc value

• Xc = E²/Qcap

• Calculate the Cap size to μF

• C=1 x 106 / 2п f Xc
* Assume 60 Hz
RULES

• Size the cap for total bank size if required per individual cap divide by 3

Qt = √S² - P²
• Remember Power is always constant
POWER FACTOR CORRECTION METHOD

• Power factor correction (PFC) is a technique of counteracting the

undesirable effects of electric loads that create a power that is less
than 1.
• Power factor correction may be applied either by an electrical
power transmission utility to improve the stability and efficiency of
the transmission network.
• Or correction may be installed by the individuals electrical
customers to reduce the cost charged to them by their electricity
supplier.
