Flipped Classroom Lesson Plan

This flipped classroom lesson plan has the goal of teaching students to make bar graphs based on collected data. On day 1, students collect data by surveying family and friends about favorite fruits, colors, sports, and animals. On day 2 in class, the teacher checks students' collected data and teaches how to make and label bar graphs to represent the data. Students then independently create their own bar graphs using the collected data. The plan aims to have students be able to organize and interpret survey data using bar graphs.

I. Goals/Objectives/Standard(s)
B. Objective
Students will be able to make a bar graph based off of the data that they have collected.
C. Standard(s):
 IAS: 1.DA.1: Organize and interpret data with up to three choices (What is your favorite
fruit? apples, bananas, oranges); ask and answer questions about the total number of data
points, how many in each choice, and how many more or less in one choice compared to
another.
 ISTE: 3A Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and
other resources for their intellectual or creative pursuits.
II. Home Based Study – DAY 1 –

III. In-Class Lesson Study –DAY 2

 Anticipatory Set—
 Teacher checks that student have information in the document
 If a student was not able to get much data from home, they will have a chance to ask some
of their classmates.
 Teacher will go over how to use the data they have collected to make a bar graph, allowing
them to compare the data more easily.
 Teacher will instruct how to properly label the graph, using the words: title, data, labels.
 Students will take time to make their own graphs.
 Students will share with a partner about their graph and answer the following questions
 How many total people did you ask?
 In each category, which one was the most favorable?
 Which one had the most in…
 Which one had the least in…
 What is the difference between the most and least?
 How many more ___ than ___?

IV. Purpose:
 The purpose of this lesson will allow students to make a bar graph the represent the data that they have
collects to be able to easily come to conclusions.

V.Lesson Presentation (Input/Output) (40 minutes)

 Activity:
• In class, the students will be shown how to take the data that they have collected and make a
bar graph based on the data. The teacher will first show the class how to label the graph on the
board in the front of the classroom. The teacher will then collect data from the class on their
favorite subject and show them how to graph it. The teacher will then walk through with the
students how to classify the most and least of a graph. After this, the students and teacher will
walk through graphing the data they have collected at home on laminated graphs that allow
them to use dry erase markers. This time will the allow the students to ask any questions they
might have.

PLAN FOR ASSESSMENT

The students will work independently on creating a bar graph based on data. This will require them to label
the graph correctly. They will take the data that is given to them by the teacher and graph it.
