What Is A Task

Languages are best learned when students focus on meaning rather than form through opportunities like tasks. A task is an activity with a clear goal and outcome that engages students in authentic language use. There are two main types of tasks: task-based, which focuses on form within a communicative context, and task-supported, which involves pre-teaching forms and using tasks for practice.

Languages are best learned when there is an opportunity for students to focus on meaning rather

than form, at least some of the time. The problem only exists in how to present these
opportunities to students. “Making conversation” is oftentimes too vague. Not only do the
students themselves become confused as to what exactly they should talk about and why (e.g.,
Talk about your summer vacation. Go!).

What is a task? A task is an activity that we do in our lives, for example go shopping, write a letter
complaining for a recent product which doesn’t work. The advantage of using a task are many
since a task is goal oriented and involves primary focus on meaning where the participants choose
the linguistic resource to complete the task and has a clearly defined outcome.so the use of task in
ESL seeks to engage learners in interactionally authentic language use by having them perform a
series of tasks.

There are different type of tasks, the task based and the task supported. The first one involves
focus on form. This is a strong version of the communicative language teaching , thus its attention
to form occurs within the context of performing the tasks.

On the other hand, it is the task-supported language teaching which involves focus on forms; this
is a weak form of the communicative language teaching. In this task the specific forms are pre-
taught and tasks are used to provide free practice.
