1) INTRANSITIVE PHRASAL VERBS (INSEPARABLE)

STRUCTURE: VERB + ADVERB

Examples: break down – go away – come back – sit down – grow up – wake up – come in

• My car broke down.


• Come on! I can’t wait all day!
• The plane took off very late.

2) TRANSITIVE PHRASAL VERBS (SEPARABLE)

STRUCTURE: VERB + ADVERB + OBJECT (separable)


VERB + OBJECT + ADVERB (stressed)

Examples: look up – turn on – turn off – give away – call up – hand in – find out – carry on

• Turn off the lights.


• Turn them off.
• I threw away my old briefcase.

3.a) PREPOSITIONAL VERBS – TYPE I (INSEPARABLE)

STRUCTURE: VERB + PREPOSITION + OBJECT (inseparable and not stressed)

Examples: agree with – look after – look for – believe in – listen to – come across – cope with

• I’m looking for a job.


• Look at the pictures on the wall.
• The doctor will be calling on a number of patients.
3.b) PREPOSITIONAL VERBS – TYPE II (SEPARABLE)

STRUCTURE: VERB + OBJECT + PREPOSITION + PREPOSITIONAL OBJECT (separable)

Examples: accused of – protect from – thank for – remind of – turn into – provide for

• She accused me of lying.


• Did you thank Daniel for helping us?
• They turned the old cinema into a night club.

4.a) PHRASAL PREPOSITIONAL VERBS – TYPE I (INSEPARABLE)

STRUCTURE: VERB + ADVERB + PREPOSITION + PREPOSITIONAL OBJECT

Examples: drop in on – put up with – look down on – do away with – run out of – faced up to

• I’m trying to cut down on sugar.


• I cannot put up with your bad temper.
• I’m looking forward to the summer holidays.

4.b) PHRASAL PREPOSITIONAL VERBS – TYPE II (SEPARABLE)

STRUCTURE: VERB + OBJECT + ADVERB + PREPOSITION + PREPOSITIONAL OBJECT


(Distransitive verbs)

Examples: take sb out – fobb sb off – put down to
