(Their rather twisted logic for a mirror-free shopping experience is that 71% of women in the UK decide not to
buy an outfit after they see themselves in the mirror!
What? That's because the outfit either doesn't fit them, or doesn't suit them!
According to scientist Dr David Lewis, when you go shopping and spot a bargain, chemicals that create feelings
of well-being - like serotonin and adrenalin are released into the brain.
(The brainwaves change and skin moisture levels rise, heart rates speed up, all indications that people get aroused.
When I go shopping the only feelings that are aroused in me are annoyance and impatience.)
According to Professor Hugh Pennington, professor of bacteriology at the University of Aberdeen, 'bags-for-life'
should never be used to carry raw meat or vegetables with soil on them.
(He says bacteria can be transferred from the meat to the bag and then onto other products which are eaten raw -
such as fruit - causing food poisoning, and raw meat should be carried in plastic bags which are then binned.
In a study by University of Pennsylvania it was found that since San Francisco banned the use of plastic bags in
2007, hospitalisations and deaths from food-borne illnesses have nearly doubled. Penn Law professor, Jonathan
Klick, found that eight per cent of reusable shopping bags contain E.coli and that 97 per cent of people admit to
never washing their reusable bags.
Even more scary is that they claim that washing the bags or cleaning them with antibacterial sprays is not
sufficient. This makes me feel a bit sad, because I hate plastic bags, I regularly wash my canvas bags, but maybe
my hessian bag for life from Tescos, should be renamed.)
According to retail research firm Experian, up to 35,000 shops could close in the UK this year.
(After surveying British town centres, they discovered that the high streets in Walkden - Greater Manchester,
Harwich - Essex and Gateshead - Tyneside had the most vacant shops with almost 60% of retail premises standing
empty. As the recession starts to really bite people have stopped shopping till they drop.)
According to the World Tourism Organisation, nearly one in ten international tourists worldwide is now Chinese.
(There were 97.3m outward-bound journeys from China in 2013, of which around half were for leisure.
Chinese tourists spend most in total ($129 billion in 2013, followed by Americans at $86 billion) and per tax-free
transaction ($1,130 compared with $494 by Russians).
More than 80% say that shopping is vital to their plans, compared with 56% of Middle Eastern tourists and 48%
of Russians.
The Chinese are expected to buy more luxury goods next year while abroad than tourists from all other countries
combined.
However, only around 5% of China’s population actually own passports.)
