A. Air Handling Unit (AHU) : Maximum NTU 3 T

This document discusses the performance of an air handling unit that uses a counterflow heat exchanger to transfer heat between an air stream and chilled water stream. It provides calculations to determine the heat transfer rate, temperatures of the exiting air and water, and effectiveness of the heat exchanger. Based on the given inlet temperatures and flow rates of the air and water, the maximum heat transfer rate of the exchanger is calculated to be 311.63 Watts with air and water outlet temperatures of 4.8°C and 4.11°C respectively and an effectiveness of 0.95.

Sample calculation

i) Air

Mass flow rate, 𝑚̇ = (1,000 L/min)(0.001 m3)(1.225 kg/m3)(1/60 min/ s)

= 0.0204 kg/s

Cair = 𝑚̇cp

= (0.0204 kg/s)(1.005 kJ/kg.K)

= 20.502W/K

ii) Chilled water

Mass flow rate, 𝑚̇ = (100 L/min)(0.001 m3)(1000 kg/m3)(1/60 min/s)

= 1.667 kg/s

Ccw = 𝑚̇cp

= (1.667kg/s) (4.18 kW/kg.K)

= 6.96806 kW/K

So that,

Cmin = 20.502W /K

Cmax = 6.96806 kW/K

Thus; Ɛ = 1−𝑐𝑒 [ −𝑁𝑇𝑈(1−𝑐)]

𝑄̇ max = Cmin( Tair,in – Tcw,in )

𝑄𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 = Ɛ𝑄̇𝑚𝑎𝑥

𝑄̇𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 = 𝑚̇cp,air ( Tair, in – Tair, out )

𝑄̇𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙
Tair,out = Tair,in - 𝑚̇𝑐𝑝,𝑎𝑖𝑟

(311.63 )
= 20 - ( 20.502 )

= 4.8 0C

𝑄̇𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 = 𝑚̇cp,cw ( Tcw, out– Tcw, in )

𝑄̇𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙
Tcw,out = + Tcw,in
𝑚̇𝑐𝑝,𝑐𝑤

(311.63 )
= ( 2.788 𝑘) + 4

= 4.11 0C

𝑄̇𝑐𝑤 = 𝑚̇cp,cw ( Tcw, out– Tcw, in )

= ( 2.788 𝑘)(4.11 – 4)

= 306.68 W

𝑄̇𝑎𝑖𝑟 = 𝑚̇cp,air ( Tair, in – Tair, out )

= ( 20.502)(20 – 4.8)

= 311.63 W
