Fielding PDF

This document provides instructions for two fielding activities: 1. Students practice throwing at a target cone and fielding throws from a partner by getting low and using proper form. Variations include increasing distance and adding a scoring system. 2. Students rotate through positions of thrower, fielder, wicket keeper and backup fielder/thrower. The fielder fields the ball and throws it at the wickets to stump the batsman. Variations add a running batsman and time pressure on the fielder.

Tutorial Notes

Fielding

1. Target Throwing
Instructions Students and partners facing each other with 15m between them.

A cone sits halfway between them and the aim is to hit it as many

times as possible.

If one partner misses, the other must correctly field the ball

by bending down and getting their body behind the ball.

Students take turns to throw at the cone and try to hit it.

Variation and Variations

Extensions - Increase distance between partners

- Add a scoring system

- 6 runs if you hit the top of the cone and 4 if you hit the base
(kanga cricket cones work well).

-  Progress to rolling the ball so fielding is more game-like (vary

between fast and slow balls)

Extension

- use one hand only to field the ball

- Vary speed and direction of the throws

LEST Learners
- students are in pairs
Equipment
- each pair needs a ball and 1 cone
Space
- each pair are side-by-side so balls are less likely to interrupt other
groups
Time
- 5-10min, depending how engaged the students are
Organisation

KTP’s - Overarm Throw
- Step, point, reach, release
- Fielding
- Get low, cup hands, fingers brush grass, eyes on ball
2. Hitting the Wickets on the Run (stage 2)
Instructions - Thrower rolls the ball towards the fielder who fields it and throws it

- at the wickets.

- Wicket keeper aims to catch it behind the stumps and ‘stump’ the
batsman or collect the ball after it hits the stumps

- Thrower becomes the next bowler, bowler becomes the next

wicket keeper, wicket keeper becomes back up fielder (behind the
wicket keeper), back up becomes the thrower.

- Rotate after every ball.

Wicket keeper can wear gloves to make it more of a game-

like situation. (if available)

Variation and Variations

Extensions - add a running batsman in next to the fielder in order to put the
fielder under more pressure

Extensions

- Fielder has to throw immediately after picking the ball up as they

are under time pressure.

- Thrower bounces the ball at the fielder instead of rolling it.

LEST Learners
- students are in groups of 4, rotate through each position throughout
the activity
Equipment
- each group requires 2 balls, one wicket, one pair of gloves
Space
- each group are side-by-side, with a few metres in between, so balls
are less likely to interrupt other groups
Time
- 5-10min, depending how engaged the students are
