PROSPECTS ADVANCED PASSIVE VOICE & MODAL VERBS

TEST A

 Rephrase the following sentences using modal verbs.

1) Perhaps she’s spending Christmas with her friends.


2) It is possible that he’ll be offered the job soon.
3) I’m sure Paula’s train left on time.
4) I’m sure Jim didn’t mention the matter to anyone.
5) I don’t think that’s Billy’s car. He doesn’t own one.
6) I think this dog belongs to Harry; it’s got his address on its collar.
7) Perhaps you forgot to pick up your change.
8) I don’t think she was sleeping when you phoned: it was only 8 o’clock in the evening.’
9) Diana has gone on holiday to Paris; I think she’s having a wonderful time there.

 Turn the following sentences into the passive voice.

1. We heard her playing the guitar.


2. Maggie has to read this novel again.
3. Who has painted this picture? It’s beautiful.
4. They have built a new town hall in Sibiu.
5. Shakespeare couldn’t have written this play.
6. He is writing a new novel.
7. My parents will give me a computer on my birthday.
8. They say John is the best DJ in town.
9. The English teacher knew who wrote the best essay.
