Capital punishment is a controversial topic that elicits strong opinions on both sides of the debate. Supporters argue that the death penalty deters serious crimes like murder by threatening death for those crimes. However, critics argue that most murders are not premeditated and research shows murder rates are not lower in countries without the death penalty. They also believe all people deserve a chance at reform through long-term imprisonment rather than execution, which they view as an inhumane act. This debate around capital punishment will likely continue for many years due to the strong feelings on both sides of the issue.
