Part 5: Inclusive Strategies
There are many ways a teacher can provide ways to ensure that education is
inclusive, however one thing must be clear: inclusivity goes beyond scaffolding
and differentiation in a lesson. As Salend(2016) states, “Inclusion is a
philosophy that brings diverse students, families, educators, and community
members together to create schools and other social institutions based on
acceptance, belonging, and community” (pg. 5). Inclusion is a way that I want
to see the world, eventually- where people are joined together to create a
sustainable, uplifting environment. The philosophy also includes
Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory of Development.
Bronfenbrenner’s theory asks to look at the many influences that affect a
child. There are 5 different levels the microsystem, the mesosystem, the
exosystem, the macrosystem, and the chronosystem. Each of these systems
affect a person’s development. When asking our students and even ourselves
to create an inclusive environment, we ask that students begin to take into
consideration all these influences. To assist students in creating these
considerations and bridging gaps of misunderstandings, I believe that the
following strategies may assist.
